New York City has been, for many years, one of the major centers of global finance and trade. The business of New York, as the saying goes, is business – or, it was. The one constant in history is the lack of constants, and the place New York City once occupied as a business and banking center may be about to come to a screeching halt.

Why? Because a self-described Democratic socialist, Zohran Mamdani, looks to be the next mayor. The election is now only hours away, he leads in every poll, in every matchup, although we note that Andrew Cuomo has narrowed that lead somewhat; and, again, it’s a fine pass New York has come to when Andrew Cuomo is the better choice.
One of the likely results of a Mamdani win will be an exodus of the productive; estimates are that as many as 760,000 people may flee New York for greener pastures.
Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers are prepared to bolt from the Big Apple if socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins Tuesday’s mayoral race — potentially setting the stage for the largest population flight in US history, an alarming new poll warned early Monday.
Around 765,000 people of the 8.4 million residents who call New York City home are preparing to leave, with about 9% of New Yorkers sharing that they would “definitely” leave the city if Mamdani is elected the 111th mayor, the Daily Mail reported, citing a survey conducted by J.L. Partners.
If those residents were to leave, it would be equal to the population of Washington, DC, Las Vegas, or Seattle fleeing the city.
Another 25% of New Yorkers — about 2.12 million — said they would “consider” packing up and leaving.
Among high earners, 7% of those making over $250,000 a year said they would definitely flee.

Consider that these surveys are taking place now, before the election has even taken place. Granted, a lot of Zohran Mamdani’s loonier ideas just can’t happen; the mayor just doesn’t have the power to do things like unilaterally hiking taxes. But there’s nothing good about a Mamdani mayoralty for productive New Yorkers.

A city, no matter how great its past, can’t survive without productive residents, and every one of Zohran Mamdani’s stated objectives would be bad for those people. Honestly, if one wanted to deliberately wreck the economy of a major city, implementing every Mamdani policy would surely get that done.
But it gets worse. This exodus of the productive could have implications for the Big Apple that go far beyond Zohran Mamdani. This exodus of the productive will also be an exodus of the few remaining moderates in New York. It would leave in place, in what was once one of the planet’s greatest cities, a possible majority consisting of the last remaining limousine leftists and the dependency class, who can be utterly relied upon to vote for any future Mamdani-styled candidate’s promise of an endless stream of free stuff.

It’s a shame, what’s happening here. For many years, if one were to speculate as to which of the world’s great cities would be considered the capital of the world, one would have had to say New York. That’s clearly no longer the case, and having Mamdani in Gracie Mansion may put that notion to rest once and for all.
Or will it cause a backlash? Will things in New York, under this communist who has never done an honest day’s work in his life, be so bad that New York’s remaining voters will cry, “Hold, enough”?
It looks like we’re going to find out. On Tuesday, we’ll know.
