“Morogris” for Borderland Beat

Police officers arrive at one of the crime scenes where a woman was killed; the ages of the victims ranged from 20 to 60 years old.
In less than 24 hours, five women were murdered in Chihuahua city, the state capital, in separate incidents. According to information from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), all these homicides were tied to the turf wars between La Empresa and the Sinaloa Cartel for control of the crystal meth drug points in the city. One source stated that one of the women killed was pregnant.
According to data from the Prosecutor’s Office, in the first three months of 2023, 18 women were murdered in Chihuahua city out of the 51 women killed in the entire state. In January, 4 women were killed, followed by 6 in February and 5 in March.
Investigators say that out of the 18 women killings in the city, at least 8 of the murders were cartel-related. The total sum is already close to surpassing the 26 women killed last year in the city.
Background: Who Is Fighting Chihuahua City?
There are two criminal groups fighting for control of Chihuahua City’s crystal meth market: La Empresa and the Sinaloa Cartel. Diario de Juárez newspaper says that both organizations have at least 100 members each in the city who are involved in drug dealing and murder.
As reported by Borderland Beat last December, the Sinaloa Cartel’s faction in Chihuahua city is headed by Salvador Humberto Sánchez Verín, alias “El Señor de la V” or “El Verin”, born on April 12, 1974 in Camargo, Chihuahua.
Since 2021 he began to fight for the Chihuahua plaza until he became the main leader of the entire organization, mainly after the December 2022 death of another Sinaloa Cartel leader, Ramón Soto Valenzuela, alias “El Doc”. El Doc maintained control of drug dealing in Aquiles Serdán area in Chihuahua city.
Although La Empresa has a strong presence in Ciudad Juárez, it became a relevant group in Chihuahua city in the past couple of years. But Chihuahua authorities have not yet identified the local leader of La Empresa.
The current leaders of La Empresa in Ciudad Juarez are Omar Alejandro Garza Santana or Omar Alejandro Chávez Santana (alias “El Nomo”), Jaime Tovar Carrillo (alias “El Jimmy”); Víctor Arriaga Aguilar, Luis Santiago Elías Cardozo (alias “El Miclo”), and Rene Gerardo Garza Santana (alias “El 300”).
