“Socalj” for Borderland Beat

In August 29, 2024, clashes between armed civilians and security personnel were reported this afternoon in Paredones and Jesús María, north of Culiacán. There were also reports of a narco road blocks near Limón de los Ramos, where trucks were set on fire.

Several Mexican news outlets are reporting on the blockades and that they are the result of the possible arrest of the leader of Los Chapitos, Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, however no arrests have been reported.

“The UNOFFICIAL arrest in Culiacán, Sinaloa, of Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, son of El Chapo, one of the most wanted by the DEA for whom a reward of $10 million is offered, is reported. Authorities have not confirmed or denied the rumor. More information is still pending,” posted Uresti via her Twitter account.

In the town of Paredones, a confrontation between hitmen and soldiers is currently taking place. Local businesses closed shop at 4:00 PM due to the violence in the streets near Jesus Maria (where Ovidio Guzman Lopez was captured following a large operation and shootout last year).
According to the information available so far, the soldiers were attacked with bullets when they arrived at the town.

The soldiers repelled the attack and a shootout and chase ensued. The incident led to blockades on the outskirts of the city, resulting in panic resulting in the closure of businesses. Thousands of workers and citizens who were away from their homes are stranded in different parts of the city as, apparently, the urban transport service is not working normally.

According to preliminary data, the criminals threw tire spikes and damaged Army patrol trucks. It is not yet known if there are any injuries or deaths.

The Mexico 15 International Highway was blocked by gunmen at several points near Limón de los Ramos.

According to reports, a truck is on fire in Limón de los Ramos and pickup trucks are blocking the road to the north.

The Public Security Secretariat (SSP) of Sinaloa called on citizens to remain calm, as the competent authorities are taking charge of the blockades in Culiacán, without confirming the reported capture of Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, son of El Chapo Guzmán.

“It is known that military personnel suffered an attack in the Peñasco ejido, information is being gathered about these events in order to communicate with the citizens, support personnel are attending the scene,” he stressed, in X.

He added that there are roadblocks with vehicles in Limón de Los Ramos on Mexico 15, so “use 9-1-1 responsibly and avoid forwarding false information or previous events to avoid misinformation.”
