Wheelchair tennis: de Groot begins gold medal match

It’s seed one vs. seed two in the final of the women’s wheelchair tennis, with the dominant Dutch Diede de Groot taking on Japan’s Yui Kamiji.
De Groot begins the match as the heavy favourite.
She is the most successful tennis player across all variations of the sport, having won the four Grand Slams at least five times each.
However, Kamiji comes into the match fresh off a gold medal in the doubles and has won the first three games in the gold medal match.

Para cycling road: Storey receives yet another gold medal

Team GB’s Sarah Storey is quite simply one of the greatest Paralympians in history.
After winning the women’s C4-5 road race in a sprint finish, the 46-year-old now has 19 Paralympic gold medals – the most of any current athlete.
And the nine-time Paralympian has moved to equal fourth on the all-time list of gold medals.
“It’s amazing. Really amazing. It’s not sunk in at all. I’m just delighted that my wheel was in front at the finish,” she said.
“It’s about finding ways to manage the process and privilege of getting older as an athlete.
“I wanted to be an athlete for as long as I possibly could. I never anticipated eight Games, let alone nine.”

Para athletics: Henly finishes 8th in discus F37
Australia’s Guy Henly has finished 8th in the final of the men’s discus throw F37, with a best attempt of 48.58.
Uzbekistan’s Tolibboy Yuldashev won gold with a distance of 57.28.
Canada’s Jesse Zesseu’s best throw of 53.24 was good enough for silver and the gold medallist from Tokyo, Pakistan’s Haider Ali, took bronze.
Para table tennis: Lei dominates to progress to semis
Lina Lei is a step closer to defending her Paralympic title, she’s claimed a comprehensive 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-6) win over Neslihan Kavas.
Lei doesn’t show much emotion after that one, it’s simply job done as she eyes off another gold medal.

Para swimming: Hance confident of his chances in the final
Ben Hance is brimming with confidence after breaking his own world record in the men’s 100m backstroke S14 heats, with the final to come tomorrow morning.
“Tonight just gotta stay cool, calm, relaxed,” he told the Nine Network.
“I was talking to the British boys, good lads, but (Great Britain’s Mark Tompsett) apparently he thinks he can beat me.
“So I had to go and be easy today and show the only competitor I have is the 15 metre lane rope and and the walkout.

Para table tennis: Lei wins first two games
Australia’s defending champion Lina Lei has won the first two games in her women’s singles WS9 quarterfinal.
It’s been an impressive performance so far from Lei, winning both games 11-6 over Turkey’s Neslihan Kavas.

Para canoe: McGrath happy to be through to both finals
Curtis McGrath was in top form winning his kayak and va’a heats to earn the one automatic qualification berth into the final.
He’s the defending champion in both events, and told the Nine Network everything went to plan today.
“We’ve been working on some stuff in training and the build up so I’m really happy with the races so far,” he said.
“Very comfortable in the kayak. Had the sense that I was a little bit ahead so I took the foot off the gas a wee bit so there’s a lot more to give there.
“The (va’a) I knew it was gonna be hard, both heats were stacked to the max, so it was nice to have that achieved and come through with the win.”

It’s amazing isn’t it.
The cyclists amaze me particularly.
A lot of them partook in the track competition earlier in the Games, and now they have had the time trial and road race in such quick succession!
They must be spent…

Para athletics: Henly falls to seventh
After his fourth attempt, Australia’s Guy Henly sits in 7th in the final of the men’s discus F37.
Uzbekistan’s Tolibboy Yuldashev currently leads the field.
Para athletics: McCracken through to final!
Australia’s Rheed McCracken has qualified for the final of the men’s 800m T34.
His time of 1:41.51 was good enough for fourth in the first heat and fourth fastest overall.
China’s Yang Wang raced a scorching 1:38.57 to break the Paralympic Record in the first heat and qualified as fastest.
But the World Record holder, Canada’s Austin Smeenk, barely broke a sweat in the second.
He led for nearly the entire race before slowing with the finish line in sight, knowing qualification was secured.
The final is scheduled for 6:12pm AEST tomorrow.

Australia holds down 11th position on the provisional standings in the team event with a total score of 68.868.

Para athletics: Petrillo wants everyone to ‘feel joy in sports’

Italy’s Valentina Petrillo has been in the spotlight in Paris as the first openly transgender athlete to compete at the Paralympics.
She’s been in action in the second of her events, the women’s 200m T12, and has made it through to the semis.
Afterwards, she said inclusion was the “most important word in Olympic and Paralympic sports.”
“We have to find solutions to include everyone, because everyone needs to feel joy in sports, so that’s why we are here,” she said.
“I would like to live in the (Paralympic) Village for all my life because, honestly, I feel protected here.
“Maybe it won’t save my life, but the one of lots of people coming after me.”

After the first round of attempts in the men’s discus F37 final, Australia’s Guy Henly sits in fifth position.
He threw 47.88.
Pakistan’s Ali Haider leads with a distance of 52.28.
Para canoe: McGrath cruises into another final
Curtis McGrath is just so good to watch every time he’s in the water, this time he’s won his men’s va’a single 200m VL3 heat.
Once again he sat back at the start, and then overpowered his rivals to set a Paralympic record.
So he’s now made the finals for both his events, where he’ll aim to defend his Paralympic gold medals.

Para cycling road: Scintillating Storey celebrates once more
Truly a generational talent, Great Britain’s Sarah Storey has just written another chapter of her remarkable sporting story.
She won the women’s C4-5 road race in a thrilling sprint finish with 19-year-old Frenchwoman Heidi Gaugain.
While it looks like Guigain will undoubtedly be the future of Para cycling, Storey continues to be the present.
That’s her 19th Paralympic gold medal across Para swimming and Para cycling.
What an athlete.

Para table tennis: Lei taking on quarterfinals
Doubles gold medallist Lina Lei is about to begin her women’s singles WS9 quarterfinal against Turkey’s Neshlihan Kavas.
Lei is a seven-time Paralympic gold medallist, winning five for China, and two for Australia.
She’s the defending champion and favourite for this event.
Para cycling road: Dementyev shocks France for gold, Donohoe well back
The gold medallist from London and Rio, Ukraine’s Yehor Dementyev has gotten the better of two French riders to win gold in the men’s C4-5 road race.
A leading pack of four distinguished themselves from the rest of the race early on.
France had strength in numbers with Gatien le Rousseau and Kevin le Cunff, but it was the Ukranian who timed his sprint perfectly.
Le Cunff takes silver and the Netherland’s Martin van der Pol finishes with bronze.
Australia’s Alistair Donohoe pushed hard in the final lap.
He was sitting in 10th at its beginning but rode aggressively to finish in six with a time 2:25:58.

Para canoe: Seipel third in women’s kayak single 200m KL2 heats
Susan Seipel‘s third place finish means she’ll have to go through the semis for a shot at the final.
Great Britain’s Charlotte Henshaw was in a league of her own, she was way ahead of the rest of the competitors, finishing nine seconds clear of China’s Wang Danqin in second.
Hungary’s Katalin Varga won the second heat to earn automatic qualification.
