George Kambosos walks to the ring

By Simon Smale

‘I will hurt him,” Kambosos says in a video intro before he walks in.

A slightly ambivalent response to his introduction from the New York crowd, knowledgeable enough to be respectful of this former champion who did so well in this ring just a short time ago.

He is making the crowd wait before making his way onto the stage – and now he’s arrived.

Can the IBF rehydration clause help Kambosos?

By Simon Smale

Absolutely.

Let’s explain this hydration clause.

In the IBF, after the  main weigh in, the fighters are obligated to meet a second weigh in, being no more than 10lbs heavier than at the official weigh in.

This is, in theory, to stop fighters completely blowing out in weight.

That should keep Hitchins at a reasonable weight and level the field a bit.

But it’s still an almighty test.

Can George Kambosos win this fight?

By Simon Smale

Let’s not beat around the bush, this is a massive test for the former lightweight world champion.

This will be Kambosos’ second fight at super lightweight (140lb limit, having previously fought and found success at lightweight.

The problem is, I don’t necessarily think Kambosos was a particularly big lightweight.

To step up in weight he gives away an awful lot of size compared to the more natural super lightweights, like Hitchins.

But wasn’t that the case against Teofimo Lopez?

It was, Kambosos gave away an awful lot of weight and size to Lopez and stunned him in this ring four years ago.

I think this might be a step to far.

But you cannot help but love that Kambosos has even taken this fight.

He’s a throwback, willing to do anything in the ring, against anyone.

Hitchins is one of the best we’ve seen at this super lightweight division.

But never, ever, rule Kambosos out.

Kambosos warned ahead of fight

By Simon Smale

George Kambosos has a 2-0 record in Madison Square Garden.

Indeed, his greatest moment, against Teofimo Lopez, came in this very ring.

But Richardson Hitchins said the Australian would be “lucky” to get out of the city after he’s finished with him.

Teremoana wins by first round TKO

By Simon Smale

Before we talk about the main event, let’s have a look at fellow Australian Teremoana Teremoana, who had some late disruption to his plans to fight on the undercard of Jai Opetaia last weekend and, instead flew out to the USA to meet Aleem Whitfield.

His US debut did not last long, stopping Whitfield in the first round by TKO.

Welcome to the big time, Teremoana.
