President Trump is laying down some heat on Senate Republicans over the SAVE America Act, which would make a great leap forward in securing the validity of our nation’s elections. Among other things, the SAVE America Act would put in place requirements for proof of citizenship when registering to vote, and for voters to identify themselves with a proper photo ID when voting. This act has been stalled in the Senate, thanks to Democrats and a few recalcitrant Republicans.

Now, President Trump has fired off another broadside at Congress. He’s refusing to sign the recently passed housing bill until the SAVE America Act is passed.
BREAKING NEWS: PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP has canceled the signing of the housing bill until Congress passes the SAVE America Act.
The stage is set in the Capitol.

The president laid down this ultimatum on Truth Social.

The president writes:
Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT
That’s one of the more powerful weapons the president has in his arsenal to put pressure on the Senate to get this done. The SAVE American Act is one of his top priorities, and has been since he resumed office. Frankly, it should be the Senate GOP’s top priority as well.

President Trump made the relative priorities of the two bills plain:

The Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren centric housing bill, which is of minor importance compared to lower interest rates, and even FISA, pales in comparison to passing THE SAVE AMERICA ACT. That is what Americans, both Dumocrats, Republicans, and everyone else, care about. Get the bad Republicans to approve it or, better yet, Terminate the Filibuster and approve it, AND EVERYTHING ELSE REPUBLICANS HAVE EVER DREAMED OF. The Dumocrats will do it in hour one, 100%. Republicans will feel very stupid if they don’t do it first. I’ll be watching with tears in my eyes!!! President DJT
As is his wont, President Trump has made things very plain: No SAVE America Act, no housing bill. It would not be surprising to see him sitting on anything else passed out of Congress until the SAVE America Act is passed. Now, here’s the catch: The Constitution, in Article I, Section 7, Clause 2, makes it plain that without the president’s approval or veto, the housing bill will become law in 10 days regardless:
If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law, in like Manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its Return, in which Case it shall not be a Law.
If that 10-day window approaches, the president does retain the option to veto the housing bill, along with anything else that lands on his desk.

That would seem an extreme move, but the president clearly doesn’t see it that way, and a large majority of the American people, who in repeated polling are showing overwhelming support for voter ID requirements, would seem to agree. As for the filibuster, the time has come. A year ago, I was as strong a proponent of the filibuster as one would find anywhere, but that was then, and this is now. President Trump is absolutely correct; the Democrats will abolish the filibuster within minutes of regaining control of the Senate, and sooner or later, they will.
The president is correct on this. There is nothing before the Senate as important, as vital to the nation’s future, as the SAVE America Act. It’s time to do whatever is necessary to get this done, to secure our elections, and to secure the future of the republic.
