The Supreme Court ruled Monday that ballots postmarked on or before Election Day but received afterward can be counted by states. “Election day” is now a misnomer because voting and counting go on for many weeks in states like California.

A pivotal ruling on the fate of states that collect and count mail-in ballots after election day has been issued. In a 5-4 decision on Watson v. RNC, the Supreme Court of the United States held that federal Election Day statutes do not prohibit states from counting ballots postmarked by Election Day but received afterward under state law.

Versions of the SAVE Act have passed the House of Representatives three times, but it remains stuck in the Senate where Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) maintains that he does not have enough votes to pass it, nor, critically, get rid of the filibuster.
Trump said the SCOTUS ruling is a “tremendous loss” and the answer is to get rid of most mail-in voting altogether:
In light of the tremendous loss in the Supreme Court today concerning Voter’s Rights, and the fact that “people’s” votes are allowed to be counted LONG AFTER an Election is over, it is more important than ever to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, which is,
1. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW PHOTO I.D. (IDENTIFICATION!).
2. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP.
3. NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS (EXCEPT FOR ILLNESS, DISABILITY, MILITARY DEPLOYMENT, OR TRAVEL!).

Eighty-three percent of Americans agree that providing ID in order to vote should be a requirement. Eighty-three percent. And yet the Senate can’t get it passed. No wonder so many voters are frustrated — and no wonder the president is exasperated.
