The Hamas terrorist group claimed it had dissolved its government Monday and is handing over power to a United Nations-backed Palestinian technical group that is part of a U.S.-brokered peace pact.

The important thing they did not reveal: whether they’re disarming. Unless and until they do that, it’s unclear if moves like this will actually make a difference on the ground in Gaza or if it’s mostly symbolic.

Key officials have stepped down, however:

But is Hamas, which proved on Oct. 7, 2023, that it is capable of unimaginable savagery, really looking for peace, or are they just attempting to outfox Israel?

Analysts say Hamas is likely looking to put pressure on Israel by using this action to appeal to US President Donald Trump, and show that the group is committed to handing over governance and allowing the peaceful rebuilding of a devastated Gaza.

“We hope that this important step on the ground will help bring an end to the aggression, stop the genocide, secure the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip, reopen the crossings to allow the entry of aid trucks and end the policy of starvation,” Ismail al-Thawabta, general director of the Government Media Office, told Al Jazeera on Monday, following a major press briefing.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Tuesday that it was nothing more than a ruse:

Hamas’s trick is simple.

Hamas’s apparent willingness to “make room” for a technocratic government is designed to prevent its own disarmament.

Hamas seeks to replicate the “Hezbollah model” in Gaza:
a technocratic administration would be responsible for garbage collection and other municipal services, while Hamas would remain the dominant military force. As long as Hamas retains its weapons, any civilian government will of course operate as Hamas dictates.

This would allow Hamas to continue oppressing the Palestinian people in Gaza, while pursuing its jihadist war against Israel.

Israel insists on the full implementation of the Trump plan, with its core principles being the disarmament of Hamas and all other terrorist organizations, and the complete demilitarization of the Gaza Strip.

It’s been nine months since the Trump-backed ceasefire was signed, but Israel continues to hit Gaza with airstrikes as it says Hamas terrorists are still actively planning attacks against the Jewish state.

As long as the terrorist group has weapons and retains military forces, it will remain a threat to Israel and peace in the region. We’ll see over time whether this handing over of some of their authority will lead to real peace or — as Saar asserted — it’s just a ploy to keep them in control of the real power.
