Kimi Antonelli’s magical season has continued in emphatic fashion, winning his home Italian Grand Prix from 19th in a historic triumph for the F1 drivers’ championship leader.
Antonelli made the race-winning move on his Mercedes teammate George Russell on lap 50 of 53, much to the delight of the thousands of Italians at Monza.
The 20-year-old extends his lead in the drivers’ championship and becomes the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966.
Russell finished second, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen third.
Oscar Piastri finished fifth, overtaken on the final lap by McLaren teammate Lando Norris.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton was sixth, while Charles Leclerc suffered a massive crash on the second lap. That crash halted the race, and reduced passionate Ferrari fans in the grandstands to tears.
