Sensational Hawks stun Magpies at the MCG

Hawthorn have continued the rash of upsets that are punctuating the run to the AFL finals, stunning top side Collingwood by 32 points.

Finn Maginness shut down Nick Daicos and captain James Sicily was mighty in defence, as veteran Luke Breust and second-gamer Brandon Ryan kicked three goals apiece in Saturday’s twilight game at the MCG for the 16.9 (105) to 11.7 (73) win.

Adding to a rugged afternoon for the Magpies, Daicos, Nathan Murphy and Tom Mitchell were all hurt and finished the game on the bench.

There will be plenty of match review ramifications out of the match as well, with several incidents especially in the third term as tempers flared.

It is Hawthorn’s best win of the season, eclipsing their upset win over Brisbane in round 13.

Collingwood have plenty to ponder after also losing to Carlton last week as the finals loom.

Hawthorn made it clear from the start this would be no regulation hit-out for the top side against 16th.

The Hawks kicked the only four goals of the opening term for a 23-point lead at the first change and then another in the second.

Collingwood did not kick their first until early in the second term, but that signalled a Magpies counter-attack.

They trailed by just 11 points at the main break, but Daicos incredibly had only three disposals in the first half.

The Brownlow Medal favourite’s lowest disposals total in a game this season had been 27, but on Saturday he only managed five.

Three days after Daicos and older brother Josh signed long-term deals, Maginness did what no-one else has managed this season — stop Nick.

The younger Daicos was also proppy after a big collision with James Blanck early in the third term, an incident that ramped up the temperature dramatically.

Soon after, Dan McStay kicked a goal and as spot fires broke up, Nick was paid a free kick and kicked another goal before the ball went back to the middle.

That brought Collingwood back to within a couple of goals, but Harry Morrison kicked a goal moments later to stop Collingwood’s surge and the Hawks had a 26-point lead at the final change.

Given Collingwood’s ability to come from behind in the last quarter, the Magpies would have been excused for thinking that had Hawthorn exactly where they wanted them.

Instead, the Hawks kicked the first three goals of the last term to kill off an absorbing duel.

Crows see off Suns fightback

Adelaide have downed Gold Coast by 28 points to keep their AFL finals flame flickering.

The 13.11 (89) to 9.7 (61) victory at Adelaide Oval on Saturday leaves the Crows two premiership points shy of eighth-placed Carlton, who play on Sunday.

Gold Coast’s Wil Powell suffered another serious injury, stretchered off after his left leg buckled in a marking contest.

In June last year against the Crows, Powell’s right ankle was dislocated and fractured when trapped in a tackle.

Adelaide led by 35 points early in the second quarter before the Suns scored six of the next eight goals.

Gold Coast were just 10 points down midway through the final quarter before the Crows steadied for a 10th win of the season.

Adelaide’s Shane McAdam and Darcy Fogarty kicked three goals each and Taylor Walker booted two while Matt Crouch continued his revival with 31 disposals and a goal.

Crow defender Mitch Hinge (31 touches), Brodie Smith (26) and Rory Laird (25) were other chief possession winners while halfback Wayne Milera (19) was also prominent.

Gold Coast’s Ben King, Levi Casboult and Jack Lukosius booted two majors apiece and Rory Atkins collected 25 disposals against his former club.

The Suns’ Rising Star nominee Mac Andrew was eye-catching with 15 disposals and eight marks while Sam Flanders was the visitor’s top ball-getter with 27 disposals.

Adelaide’s in-form Walker kicked one goal and set up another as the home side booted 5.2 to 0.3 in the opening term.

The Crows increased their lead to 35 points early in the second quarter — the Suns’ first goal didn’t come until the 12th minute of the term when Brandon Ellis snapped accurately.

Each team scored three majors in the quarter and the Crows were 28 points up at half-time, 8.4 to 3.6.

Gold Coast’s Matt Rowell kicked the opening goal of the third quarter, teammate Darcy Macpherson scored the next and when Lukosius kicked another, the Suns were just 13 points down.

The Crows then kicked four consecutive behinds — they scored 0.7 to 3.3 for the term and held a 17-point advantage at three quarter-time, 8.11 to 6.6.

In a final stanza marred by Powell’s injury, the Suns snuck within 10 points some 13 minutes in before Adelaide rallied with four of the last five goals.

Bombers survive massive scare for one-point win over Eagles

Kyle Langford has stepped up to be Essendon’s hero as the Bombers survived an almighty scare to pinch a one-point thriller over brave West Coast.

Down by 30 points early in the third quarter at Docklands Stadium, the Eagles dominated the second half and hit the lead with 100 seconds left through a Ryan Maric goal.

But Langford, who kicked four goals in the second quarter, was able to sneak out the back and run in to slot his fifth major and put Essendon immediately back in front.

West Coast threatened again, winning the next centre clearance, but Bombers defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher took a game-saving contested mark in the Eagles’ forward 50.

The last-gasp win keeps Essendon’s finals dream alive, giving them a 10-10 record. The Bombers could be only half-a-game out of the top-eight by the end of the round.

Brad Scott’s team will likely need to win all of their remaining games against North Melbourne, GWS (away) and Collingwood to be assured of playing finals after failing to boost their poor percentage against the Eagles.

Last week’s drought-breaking win over North Melbourne appeared to give the visitors a shot of confidence they have been lacking nearly all year.

West Coast travelled to Melbourne having won just four of their previous 45 games, but managed to outplay Essendon for long periods.

If the Eagles had won, they would have jumped off the bottom of the ladder and gone a game clear of North Melbourne, putting the Kangaroos in the box-seat to claim the number one draft pick.

But instead West Coast were left heartbroken, with premiership player Elliot Yeo slumping to the floor as the full-time siren sounded.

Langford was clearly best-on-ground in a scrappy affair, while captain Zach Merrett was important with 29 disposals.

Tim Kelly starred for the Eagles, collecting 30 possessions and never stopping running.
