

Millennials and Gen Z have spent years joking about brain rot and anyone who loses an evening to TikTok or any social media platform. Now it has active brain scans.

Researchers at Zhejiang University in China recruited 66 young adults to participate in a short-video experiment; however, only 56 of their scans survived initial quality control. Young adults had an average age of 23, and all had watched or experienced short-form video before. Nobody had to be taught the ancient art of swiping away from something boring.
Before each viewing session, researchers measured glutamate (the brain’s gas) and GABA (the brain’s brakes) levels in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC). The participants were then asked to watch 2- to 6-minute videos drawn from a library of 160 clips across categories such as pets, games, nature, and people performing various tasks. They were given a button to skip whatever they got bored with.
Videos that people watched to the end were classified as “liked.” Those who swiped away before the halfway point were classified as “disliked.”
Researchers found a clear difference in scans when viewers watched the entire clip that they enjoyed.
“Liked” videos were associated with significant deactivation in both the dACC and dlPFC.
The dACC is the part of your brain that says, “Hey, put the phone down.” The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, or dlPFC, is the part that actually makes you put it down. That part handles attention, working memory, and self-control, but during preferred videos, both areas didn’t just go quiet; they dropped below their own resting baseline. The video was getting through. But no one was home.

Glutamate offered some defense. The volunteers with higher resting levels in the dACC showed less suppression, suggesting that some people’s brains are better equipped to keep their warning lights on and resist the urge to keep swiping. GABA levels had no such relationship. Researchers also noted increased connectivity between the dACC and dlPFC, particularly when volunteers watched their favorite clips. Authors caution that it likely reflects both regions shutting down together rather than self-control kicking in.

This lands in the middle of a highly charged legal moment. On February 6th, the EU made a finding that TikTok was in breach of the Digital Services Act. They cited infinite scrolling, autoplay, and its recommendation algorithm as addictive design features that the platform intentionally failed to block, challenge, or mitigate. A month later, California sued and won against Facebook and YouTube in a liability case in which they were ordered to pay $4.2 million via Meta and $1.8 million via YouTube after concluding their platforms were addictive and contributed to the deterioration of a woman’s mental health. Both companies are appealing, but this new study gives their legal arguments their first psychological leg to stand on.

The experiment also did not test TikTok. Researchers used pre-recorded clips on smartphones with no app history, no “For You” page, and no TikTok recommendation algorithm. The videos were just pets, games, scenery, and people doing things, which, in fairness, cover a large amount of what you see on TikTok. The suppression they measured is not the algorithm at work. It may just be what our brains do when a video is just too good.
While catchy and ahead of the evidence, it’s worth noting that the research comes out of a Chinese state institution. While not automatically invalidating it, the paper was peer-reviewed, published in a scientific journal, and pre-registered before data collection began. Keep that in mind when looking into a Chinese university study making a five-alarm-fire claim about the platform.
The paper also provides no evidence that short-form videos cause long-term damage to viewers’ brains. They also did not measure compulsive use, and their inferences are based on what participants liked and what they kept watching, rather than on the videos’ ratings themselves. The group consisted entirely of healthy young volunteers and included twice as many men as women. Impacts on infants, preteens, older adults, and heavy users remain to be seen. The authors also admitted they don’t know whether the effects wear off after you put the phone down or compound session after session.

RedState’s Brandon Morse previously wrote about young people sitting through 15 minutes of boredom to get away from constant digital stimulation. This new study makes that idea seem a little less silly.
“Brain rot” is still a joke, not a medical diagnosis. But the study found that short videos people liked temporarily reduced activity in brain regions tied to self-control and knowing when to stop.
