“El Armadillo” for Borderland Beat
A few days ago we published a story detailing information we obtained about how the Cartel Del Sinaloa – Chapitos faction had announced a bounty on Governor Villegas of Durango. We can now provide an update.
Firstly, I should note that the Governor’s team put out a statement about our article. Below is some of it translated.
“Fake News” is how we describe the publication in which a reward is offered in exchange for information related to the Governor….NO THREATS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED against him or any member of his team…Durango maintains one of the top spots in security and this seems to weigh on our political adversaries.”
Despite the Governor’s denial, Los Chapitos seem to be escalating their threats against Villegas as today I received the following video and the image posted above by someone in Durango. The image and video depict a note that has been stabbed into a pizza box that says “Esteban Villegas, I am sending you a greeting from your friend Alejandro from Culiacan” The pizza is a reference for the phrase used to describe those loyal to the Guzman family, “La Chapiza”.
The image was left at the entrance of the Durango State Congress.
The Alejandro in question is Alejandro Lopez Guzman, the high ranking Chapitos figure we described in our original post.
