We have often written about large American cities experiencing an ongoing public safety crisis under Democrat leadership on the state and local level, with shootings, stabbings, and sexual assaults.

But you don’t usually see city councillors stepping out of the party line to call attention to what is really happening.
When Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn visited the scene of a stabbing at a downtown transit station, that’s what he did.
“I know it’s somewhat controversial, but I do believe the National Guard could play a critical role in supporting, in a supportive role with Boston police,” he said. “Simply because we don’t have enough police officers, Boston acknowledges this, and it’s creating neighborhoods that are not safe.”
The daytime stabbing involving two people happened Thursday, with the female victim “suffering multiple stab wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening, while investigators believe the man sustained life-threatening, self-inflicted injuries.”
Flynn added clarification to his comments on Friday:
“We are desperately understaffed in the City of Boston, and is there a role for the National Guard to play? Or is there not a role for them to play? It’s worth having the conversation,” Councilor Flynn said. “Terribly unfair what is happening to our police officers and their families.”
Police backed up Flynn’s remarks about just how strained the ranks are:
“Providing a healthy environment for police officers is critical, but allowing police officers to work 16 hours a day, knowing that they’re not on top of their game after a certain number of hours, after 14 hours, 15 hours, and having them respond to these dangerous situations is not healthy,” police said.

Flynn also talked about Wednesday’s stabbing in which, Boston’s WFXT reported, one person was killed in at a different transit station. Law enforcement is still conducting a manhunt for the suspect. Keep in mind that it was less than 24 hours before Thursday’s double stabbing incident.
“Yesterday’s stabbing and homicide happened right around 5.30 when people were leaving work and getting the Red Line and the Camino rail and going home. Residents and workers that come into Boston don’t necessarily feel safe and we have to provide a safer environment, a safer neighborhood, safer community and city,” Flynn said.
Democrat Mayor Michelle Wu blasted Flynn’s statements, warning against “a blanket call for federal militarization of our streets,” and calling it “foolish and irresponsible.” And she falls back on something we’ve seen from other progressive leaders – pointing to alleged drops in violent crime statistics:
“Should not be a blanket call for federal militarization of our streets. I think it’s not only unproductive but unsafe for our residents, and we’ve seen that happen in cities around the country. It’s frankly foolish and irresponsible to make that call in this environment, especially. Being specific about what the causes are is the only way to help us get solutions.”
But we have seen that is because of systemic underreporting of crimes, as we’ve written here, and where there has been a turnaround, it’s been no thanks to Dems. Of course, they would never give President Trump any credit.

Late Friday evening, though, Flynn doubled down, taking to his X account to post that no, these are not “isolated cases,” like the mayor would like to portray, and he demands better leadership – basically calling her out as a coward:

He wrote, “We don’t have isolated cases of crime in Boston. We have a full blown public safety crisis on our hands. We are dangerously understaffed @bostonpolice. Police Officers working 16 hours a day is no longer sustainable. We need positive leadership and the courage to make changes!”
As RedState wrote earlier, leftist Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, who was elected in 2025, is already seeing petitions being circulated for her recall after a barrage of bad news on public safety issues found the Democratic Socialist unable to cope.
Back to MA. As readers saw recently, the leaders of the commonwealth of Massachusetts are no guardians of society’s moral virtues. Less than a week ago, the governor signed legislation allowing abortions in the state past 24 weeks of gestation, as my colleague Bob Hoge wrote:
Massachusetts now joins nine other states plus the District of Columbia — Alaska, Colorado, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon and Vermont — in achieving the dubious “success” of removing gestational age limits.

Of course, the mismanagement and malfeasance of blue state Democrats is spread far and wide, including in Governor Gavin Newsom’s California, where a recent DOJ report found deep flaws in the prison system, which it said is allowing women prisoners to be sexually assaulted by staffers without consequences. Americans cannot depend on Democrats to keep their families safe, when their mayors’ first instinct is to turn a very real public safety crisis into a political talking point. We have a long road to go in reforming the ills in these states, stressing even more the importance of flooding the polls in November’s midterms.
