Democrat School Board Chair: Black and Brown Teachers Deserve Higher Pay Because of ‘Extra Burden’

In this episode of “Try to Control Your Shock and Amazement”…

Before we get to the insanity at hand, let’s first revisit the absurd, money-grabbing notion of so-called “reparations,” which many on the Left have tried to shove down the throats of Americans for decades. The massive wealth-redistribution scam makes zero sense for the following reasons, and more:

• No living American owned a slave. Slavery was abolished in 1865. Making people today financially responsible for crimes committed by other people generations ago replaces individual responsibility with inherited racial guilt.
• Most Americans cannot sensibly be classified as perpetrators or victims. Millions of Americans descend from immigrants who arrived after slavery ended. Others have mixed ancestry. Some Black Americans descend from people who were never enslaved in the United States.  
• The government cannot write a check without somebody paying for it. Reparations aren’t “government money.” They ultimately come from taxpayers, borrowing, spending cuts elsewhere, or some combination. A program involving substantial payments to tens of millions of people could easily run into the trillions of dollars.
• The eligibility problem is almost impossible to resolve fairly. Would eligibility require documented descent from an American slave? Would recent African or Caribbean immigrants qualify? What about someone who is one-quarter Black? The government would inevitably have to create racial classifications and ancestry tests to distribute benefits.
• It violates the principle of individual responsibility. The proposition that one person acquires moral culpability because someone sharing his skin color committed an injustice before he was born. The reverse principle — that someone inherits a financial claim because of his race — is equally ridiculous.
• It risks creating new discrimination in an attempt to compensate for old discrimination. A poor White or Asian taxpayer could potentially be required to subsidize a wealthy Black recipient solely because of ancestry.
• It would likely deepen racial division rather than heal it. Reparations require government to officially divide Americans into categories of historical debtors and creditors. Instead of emphasizing common citizenship, the policy institutionalizes the idea that Americans possess different financial obligations and entitlements because of ancestry.

Again, I could continue — but let’s move on to the topic, which in some ways is even worse, and far more blatant. 

A Democrat (of course) school board vice chair in West Hartford, Connecticut, is facing some well-deserved heat after suggesting “black and brown” teachers and administrators in the district should be paid more than white teachers and administrators because being a minority is an “extra burden.”

During a public meeting, board member LaToya Yagaloff asked whether the district offers “financial incentives for black and brown people to work here.”

Her solution to the supposed burden? Pay them more than white people in the same jobs are paid. 

Did I mention Ms. Yagaloff was decked out in cat ears? No, really. 

“I know we have efforts to increase diversity in district, so I’m wondering … are there financial incentives for black and brown people to work here? It’s an extra burden, quite frankly, to a black or brown teacher or administrator in the district, so I think we should start thinking about that, financially.” 

“I’m sure we could figure it out,” Yagaloff sarcastically admonished while smiling, adding, “We got the money,” apparently deciding race-based compensation needed only a three-word budget analysis.

Yagaloff is a vocal member of the Democrat party, and was appointed to the West Hartford board in 2023 before subsequently being elected to a full term. She currently serves as its vice chair. 

Her official biography describes her as an “equity leader” and “community advocate” with a background in restorative justice and DEI education. Her recent comments are not the first time Yagaloff has found herself at the center of controversy over race. 

Earlier this summer, she sparked outrage with a social-media post attacking celebrations of America’s 250th anniversary, saying that because slavery remained legal after America’s independence in 1776, celebrating the country’s founding was comparable to celebrating The Holocaust.

Where does one — a sane one — begin here? Me? I ignore the absurd noise.

As to be expected, Yagaloff also played the victim card after her 250th anniversary blast, whining about having been “singled out publicly” and how she “received a wave of racist and misogynistic harassment, including messages calling me the N-word and other degrading slurs.” 

The Bottom Line

Continuing to divide Americans along racial and class lines is the worst possible way to combat racism — real or perceived. You don’t defeat discrimination by institutionalizing new forms of it, and you certainly don’t improve race relations by constantly pigeonholing people into competing identity groups and assigning benefits or burdens accordingly. 

That approach doesn’t foster equality; it breeds resentment, reinforces stereotypes, and ensures that race remains at the center of virtually every facet of societal life. 

And worst of all, that’s exactly what the Democrat Party has attempted to do for six decades. Yet, who would’ve thought, say 50 years ago, that the Left’s attempts to divide our country up by skin color would be far worse in 2026?
