Emma Coronel is serving her last weeks of her sentence in a halfway house or a private home in Los Angeles, California, reported Univision today.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) confirmed to the television network that Coronel is no longer at the minimum security federal prison FMC Carswell in Forth Worth, Texas, where she spent 15 months.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, wife of drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, left the federal prison where she was serving her sentence in the United States. However, her process of “reinsertion into society” continues, Univision reported today.
In November 2021, Emma Coronel Aispuro was sentenced to three years in prison in the United States on three drug trafficking charges.
In June of that year, she pleaded guilty to three charges: conspiracy to distribute drugs, conspiracy to launder money, and engaging in financial dealings with the Sinaloa Cartel.
Also as part of her plea agreement, Coronel admitted to acting as a courier between Guzman Loera and other members of the Sinaloa Cartel while her husband was being held at the Altiplano prison in Mexico State following his arrest in 2014.
Prosecutors said Guzmán Loera used these communications to plan his 2015 escape, which he achieved through a subway tunnel built by his associates that led to the shower in his cell.
Emma Coronel was arrested on February 22, 2021. US authorities stated that her apprehension was made at Dulles International Airport outside Washington, but it was later revealed that she was the one who turned herself in.
The former beauty queen, who initially said she was not involved in her husband’s business dealings, became a public figure during his judicial process.
Coronel Aispuro not only attended the “trial of the century,” but was also named by Guzmán Loera’s former collaborators as the one who facilitated his escape in 2015.
