Fetterman Calls Mamdani a “Clown” Over His Netanyahu Arrest Threat, and He’s Not Wrong

John Fetterman doesn’t do subtlety, and he didn’t bother trying it on Fox News this weekend. Asked by Maria Bartiromo about Zohran Mamdani’s threat to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he sets foot in New York for the U.N. General Assembly in September, the Pennsylvania Democrat had a one-word review: clown.

“Sit down,” Fetterman told him, sarcastically calling him a “tough guy.”

Fetterman has spent two years building a brand as the last pro-Israel Democrat standing, and he’s clearly done watching a socialist mayor in the country’s biggest city cosplay as an international war crimes tribunal.

The arrest threat isn’t new. Mamdani has been floating it since his campaign. What changed this weekend is how far he was willing to hedge when someone finally pressed him on the mechanics of it. In a taped interview with the New York Times, Mamdani said his legal team is having an “active conversation” about whether New York City has any authority to act on the International Criminal Court’s warrant for Netanyahu, who the ICC has accused of war crimes tied to the Gaza campaign.

He wouldn’t say whether that means deploying the NYPD to actually arrest Netanyahu in September. He wouldn’t say whether he’d honor the diplomatic immunity that typically covers foreign leaders attending the U.N. General Assembly. What he did say is that Netanyahu “belongs in The Hague” and that New York won’t be “writing our own laws” to make an arrest happen; it’ll only act within whatever authority actually exists.

The problem, which Fetterman zeroed in on immediately, is that the authority doesn’t exist. The United States isn’t a signatory to the Rome Statute that created the ICC. Washington doesn’t recognize its jurisdiction over American allies, and no local police department, not the NYPD, not any other, has the standing to enforce a warrant from a court the federal government doesn’t answer to. A mayor threatening to do it anyway isn’t a legal strategy. It’s theater aimed at a base that wanted exactly this kind of confrontation when it elected him.

Fetterman wasn’t alone in that read. Legal commentators piled on almost immediately after the Times interview was posted, with one attorney calling the whole premise “clown level stuff” given that the NYPD has no jurisdiction over the ICC’s warrant to begin with. Fox News rounded up a wave of similar mockery, describing the mayor as having been “pummeled online” by critics who called the arrest threat pure political theater dressed up as foreign policy.

This is far from the first time Fetterman has broken from his party to defend Israel, and it won’t be the last. In the same Fox appearance, he repeated a line he’s used for months: that if the Democratic Party keeps drifting away from unconditional support for Israel, he may not stay a Democrat much longer. He’s pointed to the party’s leftward energy under figures like Mamdani as evidence that the coalition he joined no longer exists in the form it used to.

The fight over Israel policy inside the Democratic Party isn’t theoretical anymore. It has a face in Mamdani, running the country’s largest city, and a foil in Fetterman, a sitting senator publicly weighing whether he still belongs in the party at all. Mamdani’s team is still working out what his lawyers will let him do in September. Fetterman has already told his party what it will cost him if it keeps moving in Mamdani’s direction.
