Five were killed and three more were injured after armed men opened fire inside “El Quijote”, a bar in Las Fuentes neighborhood of Zamora, Michoacán on Friday night.

The attack occurred around 11:00 p.m. on October 2nd, when multiple gunshots were reported at the bar located on Virrey de Mendoza Avenue. Four victims were killed at the scene, with the fifth dying in the hospital today.

No motive has been offered by authorities for the attack. Bars in Mexico can be attacked by criminal groups for a variety of reasons, commonly for refusing to pay extortion fees, or paying extortion fees to a rival criminal group.

Earlier this year, in February,  a man and a woman were killed in a shooting at a bar in the 20 de Noviembre neighborhood of Zamora. Another man was hospitalized.

Zamora is one of the most dangerous cities in the world by homicide rate. Last year the city had a murder rate of 80 per 100,000, around three times Mexico’s national average. Several criminal organizations have presence in the region, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the Knights Templar Cartel, and the Los Reyes Cartel.
