The father of Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has said she is “definitely” out of the Paris Olympics in July as she continues to recover from a knee injury.

Roger Kerr told ABC Radio Perth his daughter was naturally very disappointed, but she was mentally well and working on her rehabilitation.

Kerr ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while in a mid-season training camp in Morocco in January, leaving her facing a length stint on the sidelines.

The Matildas qualified for the Paris Olympics after a 10-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan in Melbourne this week, and they will be aiming to improve on their fourth-place finish at the World Cup on home soil in 2023.

The team is not ruling Kerr out of the competition just yet.

A spokesperson for the Matildas said Kerr was not officially out of the Olympics at this stage.

She is continuing her rehabilitation with her club Chelsea in England, and as with all ACL injuries, the medical team will assess her after three months.

The spokesperson said until then, the Matildas would not have a position on Kerr’s status for Paris, and they did not know if she was a possibility or not.

But Roger Kerr has spoken to his daughter and is adamant.

“Yeah, definitely out of the Olympics,” he told ABC Radio Perth on Friday.

“So she’ll miss that and be ready for the start of Chelsea’s new season.

“Naturally everything will be very disappointing, but it’s usually the life of a sportsman, your best player goes down.

“But it’s [Paris] a real good thing for the Matildas, they’ve developed really well. Sam’s part of the team but it’s the whole team and it’s a very successful team at the moment, so hopefully they bring home a medal.”

On Thursday night Kerr won the 2023 WA Sport Star Award for the third time in a row, becoming the fifth person to receive the award three times, alongside sporting greats including tennis player Margaret Court.

“It’s just a sensational effort for her,” Roger Kerr said.

“It’s sensational company.”
