Jewish Bakery in Toronto Now Struck by Gunfire in Suspected Hate Attack

The United States isn’t the only nation seeing a troubling rise in antisemitism. We shouldn’t be too surprised about this phenomenon coming around again in Europe, where it seems to be an irrational hate that resurfaces every three or four generations. And, in the Islamic world, hatred of Jews seems to be woven into the culture. Here in the United States, we’re seeing a troubling rise in this issue among the increasingly radical political left.

But in Canada? Yes, in Canada. In the latest, two Jewish-owned bakeries were targeted Sunday morning with vandalism and, in one case, gunfire. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

A Jewish-owned bakery chain in Toronto was targeted in two separate incidents on Sunday morning, including one location that was struck by gunfire, authorities said.

No injuries were reported and investigators are working to determine whether the incidents are connected, Toronto Police said.

One store location was struck by gunfire, while a second sustained damage to a window, police said.

Now, some might dismiss that as mere hooliganism, but it’s rather more than that. The Toronto police are investigating this as a hate crime, as well they should.

The Toronto PD post reads:

We are investigating two incidents that occurred this morning at separate locations of the same Jewish-owned bakery chain. One location was struck by gunfire, while the second sustained damage to a window. 

At this time, investigators are examining whether the incidents are connected and working to identify those responsible. There have been no reported injuries. 

The Hate Crime Unit and the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-2222.

This ancient, irrational, unfounded hate is resurfacing again, all over, and this is just another symptom. As of this writing, there’s no indication that the Toronto PD even has a suspect in mind, much less a motive; we might note that Toronto has a substantial Muslim population, but at the moment there’s no indication as to who may have been involved.

And that’s the rub, isn’t it? In my life, I’ve been lucky to have quite a few Jewish friends. One of my wife’s best friends outside the family is a Jewish lady who is a delight to be around; she refers to herself jokingly as a “Jewish American Princess.” The Jewish people I’ve known have been, almost universally, warm, friendly, industrious, and considerate.

Hate is almost always irrational, but hatred of the Jewish people seems more irrational even than most. And here’s the thing: Hate tends to escalate. If the perps here aren’t discovered, caught, and dealt with, pour encourager les autres, then the next such incident may be considerably more than just hooliganism.
