Key moment from Keys vs Swiatek semifinal unpacked

By Hanan Dervisevic

This moment had tennis fans wondering whether Iga Swiatek was using “dirty tactics” against her opponent Madison Keys during their epic semifinal match.

Keys was ready to start the third set but Swiatek was in no rush and disappeared for an extended period.

When the Pole player came back, she then had a quick warm up on court.

American star Keys tapped her watch and questioned why the chair umpire had not given Swiatek a time penalty.

“The timer on the side of the court had well and truly stopped for a good couple of minutes there,” Sam Stosur said in commentary for Nine.

“Keys was very obvious in showing that she was ready to get started.”

But after the match, Keys later explained she was just asking how much time her opponent had left because it wasn’t up on the board.

“I was just asking him how much longer it was, her break,” she said.

“I mean, I think the rules are fine. The clock ran out on my change, but not hers, so I was just asking.”

Local silverware guaranteed

By Hanan Dervisevic

First up on Rod Laver Arena, two all-Australian wildcard teams in Olivia Gadecki and John Peers, and Kimberly Birrell and John-Patrick Smith, will battle it out in the AO 2025 mixed doubles final today!

It’s the first time since 1967 that the Australian Open mixed doubles final will feature two all-Australian pairs.

The winning pair will become the third Australian duo in 20 years to take out the title, following Matt Ebden and Jarmila Gajdosova (2013) and Sam Stosur and Scott Draper (2005).

They will split $175,000 in prize money while the runners-up will share $97,750.

Here’s what Gadecki had to say about the all-Aussie final after her semifinal win.

“To have an All-Aussie final would be such a great opportunity — either way we’ve got an Aussie winning a slam,” she said.

“So that’s pretty incredible.”

The match will begin at 12pm (AEDT).
