Live: Aussie cyclist breaks world record, re-race ordered after wheelchair crash

Ryan Elliot starts the Aussies off and gave them the head by 0,1 seconds.

Leigh Hoffman, Olympic bronze medallist and defending Commonwealth champion in this event, held that gap.

And the Aussies hold on through Dan Barker to beat Trinidad and Tobago by 0.063 seconds.

That means the Aussies will race for gold.

And they’ll race against England, who are without Matthew Richardson after his sickening crash in Japan earlier this week.

The second-position for England was not good, dropping 0.2 seconds to the Aussies when Harry Ledingham-Horn was on the front.

But it was a hell of a ride from Hamish Turnbull to drag the English back ahead of Trinidad and Tobago, finishing +0.045 seconds behind the Aussies.

Game on.

The ladies 400m semifinals are underway now, however we won’t see any green and gold in those heats — but there’s two Aussies up next, in the men’s 400m semis.

We’ll have Thomas Reynolds in lane 5 of the second heat, who ran his personal best time of 44.69s this season.

Then Reece Holder is up in heat 3, lane 3 (am I superstitious or are those angel numbers a sign of good luck?) — he’s got a PB of 44.53s.

The best times from tonight’s heats will advance to Saturday’s 400m men’s final.

Molly McGill, Kristina Clonan and Alessia McCaig managed the fourth-fastest time in qualifying, knocking the defending champions New Zealand out of the medal placings.

They will face the home team, Scotland, in that third-place play off.

England and Wales will fight it out for gold.

Australian 110kg weightlifter Ridge Barredo has been knocked out of the competition after a nasty knee injury on his failed third snatch attempt at 162 kilograms at the Armadillo.

It came after the judges handed him a no-lift on his first attempt at 155kg, which he felt was a rough call, saying they were being “hard arses” and he’s “seen a lot worse” allowed.

His description of the injury is not for the squeamish.

“I heard [my knee] pop on the third attempt, I tried to give it my all and I heard it pop [out] and pop back in. It’s a little bit of pain and some ice and do some recovery hopefully do some scans and hopefully it’s not too serious.

“Just to feel it was a little bit scary. Initial pain was an eight or nine out of 10. It’s alright now, probably a six or seven but definitely scary.”

This was his third Commonwealth Games and he says he’ll be back at Amdavad in four years.

“I’m not done yet, no way. I’ll be back. Four times. Watch. Mark my words.”

But the former Married At First Sight star, whose partner and kid were watching today, says his TV days are done.

“My TV career is definitely done, I’ve found my partner. I’m off reality TV. Wouldn’t recommend it.

“If you want to have some fun in a toxic environment, go for it, but personally I wouldn’t be going back.”

After a slow, watchful heat, Abbey Caldwell is hoping for a faster mile final.

The milers are lucky enough that only their heat placings, not times, matter for qualification, so both she and Jess Hull could safely coast into the final.

The first and second heat, with Claudia Hollingsworth also progressing, and yesterday’s men’s runs were accompanied by The Proclaimers’ classic 500 Miles.

And in a four-lap race, you’ve got a bit of time to actually notice those things

“I thought about it mid race and I couldn’t believe it,” Caldwell says.

“I was like ‘no, concentrate here’. But it actually brought a really good energy, so don’t mind it.”

The green and gold gals make it look easy as they fly around the track (four times!) to qualify for the women’s one mile medal event.

Claudia Hollingsworth won her heat with a time of 4:31.17, a new personal best for the young gun!

She’ll join fellow Aussies Jessica Hull and Abbey Caldwell (the earlier heat’s second and third-placegetters) in Saturday’s final.

Reckon our gals in with a chance of a medal here, or maybe even all three? We’ll have to wait and see!

This iconic event hasn’t been part of a Commonwealth Games since Jamaica hosted in 1966 — it’s replacing the 1500m event in Glasgow this year.

Australian Tara Neyland has raced into the gold medal final, with a factored time of 4:45.796 for the 4,000m.

That’s beaten her own world record!

An incredibly dominant performance from the multiple world champion!

She is going to face England’s Morgan Newbury, who actually broke the world record in the C5 classification as well!

Erin Normoyle will compete in the bronze medal final, which is a great result for the rider whose focus at these Games is in the kilo time trial.

Corey Wedlock and Aaron Teys continue their dominance so far at these Games, finishing against Fiji 6-3, 11-1.

After claiming the first set, the Aussies got off to a flyer in the second, winning four shots in the first end which set them up well.

Fiji didn’t bowl badly. There were a few moments that I’m sure, if they had again, they may choose a different tactic.

The Aussies definitely piled on the pressure with no loose bowls.

Overall, the Aussies were just a little better every time and I guess that’s ultimately what it’s all about.

And just like that, we’ve got two Australians advancing to the women’s one mile final!

Jessica Hull crossed the line second behind Kenya, and Abbey Caldwell took third in the first of tonight’s two heats.

Shout-out to whoever has the aux cord over in Glasgow and decided to play the The Proclaimers hit I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) as the gals raced through their first couple of laps.

We’ve got 21-year-old Victorian Claudia Hollingsworth up next in the other qualifier heat, kicking off in just a moment.

The ladies are on the Scotstoun Stadium track now, just starting their one mile qualifiers.

We’ll have three Australians compete across tonight’s two heats, Abbey Caldwell and Jessica Hull are in the first race.

Then Claudia Hollingsworth will represent in the green and gold in the second heat.

The first six women to cross the finish line in each heat will qualify for Saturday’s final.

It’s the first time the event has been on a Commonwealth Games schedule in 60 years, so these races are sure to be interesting!

We’ve seen some very impressive times recorded on the athletics track at Scotstoun Stadium, and a number of athletes have commented about how it’s a “fast track”.

We asked Australia’s new men’s 100m record holder what exactly that means. He said it’s hard to describe without the experience of running on a bunch of surfaces, but:

“It just feels super responsive,” Lachlan Kennedy said.

“You put your foot down and your foot just sort of bounces back up; the more you give into the track, the more it gives back.

“It’s like running on sand vs running on grass, that’s obviously exaggerated, but sort of imagine it like that. Some tracks feel closer to grass and others feel like you’re sinking into the track a little bit.”

The Sportflex Super X 720 track contains technology that was first used at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where four world records were recorded.

According to manufacturers: “It is softer, with elliptical-profile air cells that return energy to the athlete more efficiently, helping improve performance. It was first pioneered at the Beijing 2008 Olympics which staged four world records and has been further improved.”

The track was only laid earlier this month and, while the temporary stands will be removed from Scotstoun, the track will be “gifted to the city”, according to organisers.

“Our investment will not only provide world-class facilities for the Commonwealth’s leading athletes, but it will also create a local legacy, strengthening opportunities for grassroots athletics post-Games,” Glasgow 2026 chief executive Phil Batty said.

Two Aussies in this one, Erin Normoyle and Tara Neyland.

Both of they are C4 athletes.

The C4 class is designated for athletes with lower limb impairments, missing limbs, or mild neurological conditions affecting coordination.

In this race, the overall positions are determined by factored time.

That means the C5 athletes times’ will stand as is, while there is a grading applied to the C4 athletes, who have a higher degree of impairment.

As with the team pursuit, the fastest two riders will race for the gold and silver medals, and the third and fourth riders will race for the bronze medal.

The Aussie pair of Corey Wedlock and Aaron Teys have claimed the first set  in their match up against Fiji 6-3.

It was tight until the fourth end, where Australia scored five shots. That, really, was the only difference between the two teams.

This looks like it will be a quality game!

The ladies are off and running in the 100m hurdles!

And Aussie Michelle Jenneke crosses the line third in her heat, with a time of 12.72s — let’s gooooo!

That means she has automatically qualified for the medal event, all without knocking over a single hurdle!

What a run, can’t wait to see how she does in tonight’s final.

In the men’s javelin throw, Australia’s Cameron McEntyre has qualified for tomorrow’s final after finishing sixth in qualifying.

His throw of 78.91 was well short of his PB, but he’s done enough in tough conditions.

McEntyre spoke to the ABC afterwards:

“Everyone struggled with the wind and the temperature as well. Hopefully better conditions tomorrow and then push for a podium.”

That’s great racing from the Aussies!

Jessica Gallagher and her guide Jacqueline Mengler-Mohr took the lead straight away in their sprint and led from the front, holding off the fast-finishing English woman to claim a 2-0 win.

That’s very impressive.

They will face New Zealand’s Emma Foy and Jessie Hodges in the final.

Michelle Jenneke is representing the green and gold in the women’s 100m hurdles, underway now at Scotstoun Stadium.

Keep an eye on lane 5!

There are two heats tonight, Jenneke is in the second one, and the best of the best will advance to the finals later on day seven.

Jenneke is marking her fourth Commonwealth Games this year, having clawed her way back from a hamstring injury in 2024.

New Zealand struggled there in the final TT in that team pursuit, finishing +4.606 seconds behind the Aussies.

That means it will be England vs Australia in the men’s final.

Gosh, that was scary to watch.

Aussie weightlifter Ridge Barredo gave the clean and snatch his all, but his hopes of a medal in Glasgow have been dashed.

He was on his third and final attempt of the 190kg, but lost his balance in the adjustment and fell to the ground clutching his knee.

Barredo was down for a bit as officials checked his condition, but was able to walk off the stage — so that’s a good sign!

He’s icing the injury now, I hope he’s alright…

Commonwealth Games organisers have ordered a re-race of the women’s T54 1,500m final.

It will be held at 10:24am BST on Friday (7:24pm AEST).

The race was thrown into chaos when Aussie Eliza Ault-Connell went down heavily in a nasty crash with world champion Noemi Alphonse.

Canadian Nandini Sharma was disqualified for causing the crash, as she went on to finish second.

Athletics Canada said it was “disappointed” in a statement.

“Having considered the multiple appeals that were submitted the Jury has decided that the disqualification will stand. While Athletics Canada is disappointed with this decision, we accept the process and look forward to Nandini competing again in the T53/54 400m race.”
