BOWLED HIM! LYON STRIKES!
By Simon Smale
Key Event
Oh that’s a beauty from Lyon.
Right through the gate, a ball that drifted out the hand and turned back in to hit off stump.
Yadav goes for 8 and Australia are well in this game!
60th over – Nathan Lyon comes into the attack
By Simon Smale
This will be a test for both men. The big hitter in Suryakumar Yadav against the metronomic Nathan Lyon.
59th over – Murphy comes in
By Simon Smale
Rohit is on 94 – you wouldn’t put it past him to slap a six over the top to reach his ninth Test century.
Murphy must be alert to that though and is bowling beautifully again – wonderful stuff.
Great over from Murphy, probing with a ball that’s drifting from leg to off, a maiden, his third of the innings.
58th over – Cummins will bowl another
By Simon Smale
Solid defence to the first two ball but then BANG! Hooked backward of square for another boundary.
Rohit is batting superbly – he moves to 93.
Another solid defence by Rohit.
But now Cummins strays onto his pads and he clips him away for a single to square leg.
Putting away the bad balls, quietly defending the good. It’s been textbook from Rohit Sharma so far.

57th over – Murphy is going well, and will keep going
By Simon Smale
About to bowl his 18th over, Yadav pushes to the ball to midwicket for no run.
Now he defends to cover, same result.
A quick single to cover for Yadav there, Murphy’s accuracy has tamed his early shotmaking somewhat.
Another single, this time Rohit clipping off his pads.
Pace ranging from 87kph to 97kph as Murphy mixes it up and keeps the batter thinking.
Just two from the over.
56th over – Cummins continues
By Simon Smale
A single to Rohit off Cummins, who is bowling better today than he did yesterday, but is still letting the odd loose delivery fly down.
Yadav drives and gets a single to mid off.
Cummins is up at 140kph at the moment and making Rohit play at every ball.
Game on?
By Simon Smale
If we can get them to 170-odd for 6, we might only be down 50 runs or less then it would be really, really interesting
– David
India’s tail is long-ish, but it is a tail that can swing and wag.
Could be set up very nicely.
That wicket was just huge.
55th over – Murphy continues
By Simon Smale
Solid defence from Yadav.
Oh nice flight and drift in but still pitching on leg stump so Yadav pushes off his legs for a single.
That’s better, the ball drifting from outside leg to off and Rohit guides it just past bat pad for a single to square leg.
Good defence from Yadav, reaching forward, smothering the ball and any turn.
There’s a man on the 45 at deep leg gully to stop a single from Yadav as he turns the last off his pads.
54th over – Pat Cummins returns to the attack
By Simon Smale
Oh did that keep low? Rohit had to get down to keep it out but did so well.
Oh dear, an attempted hook misses from Rohit, that ball not getting up too much.
Very solid stuff from Rohit, who pushes into the off side for a single.
Good defence by Yadav to a good ball from Cummins.
Just a little dab off his hip now though as Cummins strays to the leg side. A single to end the over.
53rd over – In comes the debutant Suryakumar Yadav
By Simon Smale
He has a strike rate of over 100 in ODIs and 175 in T20Is.
Whatever happens, don’t expect Suryakumar Yadav to hang about.
FOUR! There you go. Second ball, swept hard to backward square leg for a boundary.
He sees out the rest of the over without scoring.
Great start for Australia after lunch.
VIRAT KOHLI GOES FIRST BALL AFTER LUNCH!
By Simon Smale
Key Event
Massive wicket!
Down the leg side, Kohli could not resist having a little nibble at it, Carey covered his ground well and caught the edge that was offered to him at the second attempt.
MASSIVE WICKET FOR TODD MURPHY!
Kohli has to go for 12.
53rd over – Todd Murphy continues after lunch
By Simon Smale
Bob Massey took eight in each innings on debut at Lord’s
By Simon Smale
6+ on debut:
Off the top of my head, Bob Massie took 8 in both innings on debut at Lords in 1972– NeilA
You’re not wrong, NeilA.
Just the 6 Test matches for the West Australian but a spectacular debut.
Figures of 16/137 for the match.
Ric delivers
By Simon Smale
Sorry I’m late today Simon but I had to work a bit. (Just the pits !) One for Ric Finlay perhaps: how many bowlers have taken a five-for in their debut Test ? And even better: a six-for ? Murphy’s going for the latter I think.
– Old timer
I did not reach out to Ric for this, so he’s actually read your mind Old timer.

Of the 16 Australians who took five wickets on debut, only one took the first four wickets of the innings (Ian Meckiff of Victoria), and only one other took the first three (Robert McLeod, another Victoria player).
Todd’s going alright I reckon…

He’s also just the fourth Australian bowler to take the first three wickets of a Test match on debut.

Can we talk about Warner?
By Simon Smale
Picking Warner overseas? Is it acceptable to discuss?
– Chris
I think we have to discuss it.
Warner’s double century against South Africa at the MCG was remarkable.
But there is no doubt that he has slowed down and there is no doubt that innings like that are very much outliers in his overall trend.
If he’s late on Mohammed Shami at 130-odd kph though, how’s he likely to go against James Anderson with a swinging ball in England? Or Joffra Archer/Mark Wood et al at close to 150kph?
If we’re playing horses for courses with Travis Head, then it’s definitely something we need to look at with David Warner if the form is not there.
Carey has been excellent
By Simon Smale
Off topic, but after seeing that footage of Foster up to the stumps, can’t help but wonder if only England trusted his batting more. Not bad with Foakes though! How’s Carey faring so far?
– Lewis
As an Essex man, that is something I wondered a lot as well.
I’m sure it may have crossed his mind a few times too, throughout his excellent domestic career.
But yes, while we’re on the subject of keepers, Carey has been brilliant.
Standing up to a pace bowler is no mean feat, it requires discipline from both bowler and keeper and we’ve seen that.
No worries about Carey’s glove work.
Lunch: India 3-151 (Rohit 85, Kohli 12) – trail Australia by 26 runs
By Simon Smale
Key Event
So, another solid session for India, accumulating 74 runs for the loss of just two wickets.
Both of those fell to young Todd Murphy, who along with the hugely economical Scott Boland, has been the pick of Australia’s bowlers.
Lots more work to do here, as Kohli has come in and looked very solid early in his innings.
India will overtake Australia’s first innings score in this next session, and every run will be crucial in this Test, although the pitch does not appear to be playing too badly all things considered.
52nd over – Lyon to bowl the last before lunch
By Simon Smale
Kohli pushes to square leg for a single.
Lyon has nice flight, Rohit has exceptional eyes and hands to deal with it, solidly defending outside off.
Rohit defends the last few balls before lunch, although there is a half-hearted appeal there at the end as the ball pops onto the pads of Rohit.
Let’s have a break.
