The Swans take on the Crows in a Friday night blockbuster at the SCG in what could be a preview of this year’s qualifying final.

Second-placed Sydney lost to Fremantle last week, but Dean Cox’s men are still in prime position to host a qualifying final.

The Crows have won four of their last five to roar into top-four contention, and a win tonight could boost their campaign for the double chance in September.

Tom Papley grabs an opportunist goal for Sydney

By Andrew McGarry

We’re deep in time on in the wet, and the Swans go inside 50, it’s a big contest, and Lachie McAndrew thought he had a mark.

It’s not given, and Tom Papley darts forward and wraps him up. The ball drops and it’s a free in the square!

Papley plays on and snaps it, and the Swans are suddenly back to eight points.

Papley snaps a goal for the Swans

By Andrew McGarry

Ok, here we go!

We’re nearly in time on in the second term, and the Swans are getting hold of it more.

They move it down the right, and it comes out to Tom Papley, and he snaps a goal – and you know the rest! He’s off to the races with a team-lifting celebration.

The Swans are back to a bit over two goals down.

Charlie Curnow misses a shot as the rain falls in Sydney

By Andrew McGarry

That was better from the Swans, with a prime burst from Nick Blakey, who runs through the middle and chips to Charlie Curnow inside 50.

The mark is spoiled, but it’s a free.

Curnow kicks from 45, but it slides to the left for a point.

And the rain is tumbling down at the SCG! Good news for the Crows, you’d think.

Warner hits back for Sydney

By Andrew McGarry

The Swans are under the pump here, but they’ve finally hit on the counter.

A big contest from James Jordan prompteed the turnover, Riley Bice intercepted the ball and ran it back, handballed to Errol Gulden who bounce handballed the ball to Chad Warner, who stepped inside and snapped perfectly from 30m out.

A much-needed goal for Sydney!

Swans error lets Cumming in for Crows goal

By Andrew McGarry

That passage of play is awful for Sydney.

The Crows had it at half-forward, and they kick it long to the hotspot, there’s a lot of people there, Tom McCartin has the mark but it comes off his hands and goes out the back, for Isaac Cumming to waltz into goal and kick it.

The Crows lead by 27!

Swans need the rain to stay away

By Andrew McGarry

I think the Crows have missed their chance to nail it down . Sydney for me from here.

– Phillip

Phillip,

I’m not sure about that right now.

The Swans are not looking sharp, the Crows are. The visitors’ lead is bigger than it looks, because Sydney hasn’t proved they can put on a run of goals.

It’s not over by any means, but it’s advantage-plus to the Crows at this stage.

Riley Thilthorpe quietens the crowd!

By Andrew McGarry

The Swans have got the opener, but just like the first quarter they haven’t been able to go on with it.

The Crows play effort football down the wing, with Josh Rachele taking a big contested mark, then wheeling and kicking to the left forward pocket where Riley Thilthorpe takes a pack mark on the second attempt.

It’s a difficult shot, but Thilthorpe never looks like missing!

Great goal, and that’s important for the visitors. They’re back out to a 21-point lead.

Swans get the early goal through Logan McDonald

By Andrew McGarry

Sydney needed to get off to a fast start in the second term – and they’ve done it!

A quick clearance saw the Swans take a direct route, and the kick inside 50 found Logan McDonald.

The Western Australian forward took the mark, and he slotted the goal to give the crowd something to cheer about.

The margin is back to 15 points.

QT: Adelaide 6.5 (41) leads Sydney 3.2 (20)

By Andrew McGarry

That has been a rough opening quarter for the Sydney Swans, and Toby Murray has added insult to injury by kicking a late one.

The siren sounds and the Swans trail by 21 points – and it could have been more.

The Swans have just not been on it here, outside of the first couple of minutes. The Crows have had too many chances – they haven’t taken all of them, but they’ve taken enough, and Matthew Nicks’s men are on their way.

Sydney return fire with goal to Papley

By Andrew McGarry

We probably shouldn’t be surprised, but after all that Adelaide momentum, the Swans have finally put it together, with Tom Papley raising the energy levels with a trademark goal.

They had a chance to make it two in a row, but Logan McDonald – who had taken a strong mark inside 50 – disappointed by hitting the post.

Warner takes an SCG screamer – but the Crows get the goal to kick clear

By Andrew McGarry

What a 45 seconds that was!
The ball was cleared out of Sydney’s D50, and suddenly from nowhere Chad Warner decided to strap a rocket to his back and take a screamer off the back of Luke Nankervis!!

The crowd was loving it, and the Swans flooded downfield, but the kick was terrible going straight to the Crows defence.

They swept down the corridor, and a chip across to the right side of 50, found Lachie McAndrew.

The ruckman marked and kicked the goal! The Crows lead by 22 points, and Sydney is in all sorts of strife.

Crows dominating the forward entries

By Andrew McGarry

We’re over halfway through the first quarter, but that early burst from Sydney has died off.

The Crows have 12 inside 50s to just five for Sydney right now. Dean Cox’s men have to do something about stat and quickly.

Darcy Fogarty and Josh Rachele goals pile on the pressure for Sydney

By Andrew McGarry

Loading Twitter content

This is not the same game!

The Swans were in charge early doors, but now Adelaide is just sweeping through the Sydney defence.

It’s not quite goals at will, but Darcy Fogarty played it smart to stay down and shark it from a contest to score, then the Swans were again under pressure and Josh Rachele snapped another.

The visitors are 14 points up, and in control of the ball. The sounds from the crowd are of serious concern right now.

Crows hit back with goals

By Andrew McGarry

The game has turned in the last couple of minutes.

The Crows have put the clamp on, and Sydney can’t get out.

Alex Neal-Bullen got their first goal, then Izak Rankine snapped another, and suddenly the visitors were in front.

Fri 17 Jul 2026 at 7:51pm

Ben Keays gets a goal rubbed out again – and it’s the right call!

By Andrew McGarry

The Crows did better there, breaking down the left, staying near the boundary.

Ben Keays got the ball in the left forward pocket. He thumped a ball from nearly 50, and it went through a couple of metres wide of the goal post. But it’s called a goal!

The crowd are incensed, and after a review, it’s overturned. A point.

Braeden Campbell kicks one on return for Sydney

By Andrew McGarry

Loading Twitter content

The Swans are up and running at the SCG!

They are hitting on the turnover, and going straight down the corridor. A long kick to the left side of 50 and Braeden Campbell reaches up and takes the mark.

The crowd is happy as Campbell kicks it from 25m out. he scores on his first game of the year.

Fri 17 Jul 2026 at 7:46pm

Chad Warner gets Sydney on the board!

By Andrew McGarry

The Sydney Swans love scoring off turnover, and they get things underway like that again.

The Crows have an errant kick from Wayne Milera.

The Swans come up, and Braeden Campbell gets it to Errol Gulden, who finds Chad Warner. The Chad fumbles it, but regathers and slams it through from 50!

Good opener for Sydney!

Not much space early at the SCG

By Andrew McGarry

It’s been a tight start with not a lot of space for anyone.

The Swans had a nice break down the left wing, but it came to nothing. The home side has held solid in defence, but there haven’t been any clear-cut chances yet, a couple of minutes in.
