The women’s 400m hurdles repechage round is underway, with Aussie Alanah Yukick pulling off a personal best with a time of 55.11.

But, agonisingly, her result came down to a photo finish between herself and Belgium’s Naomi van den Broeck.

Repechage, when loosely translated from French, means “second chance”.

Only the first 2 in each repechage heat advance to semi-final.

Initially, officials announced that van den Broeck had qualified, but the two athletes were tied down to thousandths of a second, and Australia’s Alanah Yukick has qualified for the semi-finals.

Italy’s Ayomide Folorunso came first in the heat with a time of 55.07.

So while only the top two athletes from each heat would progress, this time there’s three going through.
