Live: Penrith scores 65m try to snuff out Titans’ stunning comeback in golden point

Penrith superstar Nathan Cleary says he has never before kicked a field goal like that game-tying 41m shot, where he sprinted 15 metres backwards to get in position to receive an 18m dummy-half pass before drilling it from beyond the red for two points to tie the game.

“Even when I ran back I thought ‘Should I be doing this?’ and just had a crack,” he tells Fox.

“A bit disappointed I missed the two after. I probably got the harder one and missed the two easier ones.”

Cleary admits they got complacent when up 24-0 at half-time.

“It’s probably lucky we get away with a win in a game we can learn so much [from].

“Complacency in the NRL’s not good enough. Myself included, you get up 24-0 and you just think it’s gonna happen in the second half and it just doesn’t. It’s a good learning curve.”

The Panthers looked like they might be pinned inside their half for the set, but on the fourth tackle they spin it left and put Casey McLean one on one with the out-of-position Jacob Alick-Wiecke.

McLean breaks through and finds Blaize Talagi backing up on the inside, and he skips out of AJ Brimson’s desperate tackle to score the game-winning try.

It is SUCH a cruel way for this game to end for the 16th-placed Titans after they came back from 24-0 to lead 26-24 with two minutes left.

Then, of course, Nathan Cleary steps up with a gorgeous 41-metre strike to tie the game, and then that try.

Unbelievable.

The Titans don’t get into field goal range, so Jayden Campbell bombs and Dylan Edwards fields deep inside the 10m area.

They aren’t in position, so Cleary bombs, Tom Jenkins comes down with it, passes to Blaize Talagi, who finds Cleary in a great position, but he shanks it left.

They spin it to get out of their own end and AJ Brimson skips out of Nathan Cleary’s tackle, then through Liam Martin’s effort, breaking into the backfield and finding Phil Sami, who’s too fast for Brian To’o and Dylan Edwards.

Campbell converts and it’s 24-22 with 13 minutes left.

Against 12 men, the Titans spin it right and Jojo Fifita almost scores.

Sam Verrills wastes no time, diving over from dummy half and all of a sudden it’s only an eight-point lead for the Panthers.

The Titans break through with Jayden Campbell and he passes to Brian Kelly, but he’s brought down before he can catch the ball by Izack Tago.
