By Simon Smale

Magnificent from Patrick Reed, who has no idea his approach shot has gone straight in the hole there on 17.

He leaps from seven under to nine under and into joint-second.

A magnificent putt from Justin Rose on the 18th!

He’s hit a 66, nine shots lower than he managed yesterday  for six under on the day, and there is now nothing more he can do.

The roar that emanated from the masses of supporters will no doubt echo right the way down to McIlroy on the 16th and deep into his soul.

So often the bridesmaid. Can Rose get a green jacket?

McIlroy with a peach of a shot on the 16th!

By Simon Smale

It’s only a short hole, but with water on one side, sand on the other, he has to be perfect off the tee there.

And he’s not far off that.

Neither is Bryson DeChambeau for that matter.

If he hadn’t had his little wobble on 11 and 12, who knows where our nerves would be now.

Åberg misses the 30-foot putt for the lead

By Simon Smale

Tough on Ludvig Åberg, who just missed with the putt that would have put him in with a share of the lead at the 17th.

He overcooked it though and the ball is rolling excruciatingly away from the hole, making par a tough ask too.

Up and over the trees, right onto the centre of the green.

Wonderful shot to stay in contention.

McIlroy nails a beauty onto the 15th green!

By Simon Smale

A HUGE ROAR FROM THE GALLERY!

“RORY! RORY! RORY!” is the chant as the ball beats the ledge and rolls towards the hole.

A foot shorter than he managed and we’d be having a very different conversation right now.

It’s a stunning shot, moving the ball from right to left and sailing onto the green.

He is in with a chance of making eagle and saving his round!

Saving the Masters!

DeChambeau in the water at 15!

Now Rory is short of the green with his approach

By Simon Smale

It wont be a putt on the 14th for Rory.

He falls short of the green.

Meanwhile, Justin Rose is skirting the trees on the 17th, hoping for a solid approach to the green….

And he misses the green too.

Meanwhile, back on the 14th, Bryson DeChambeau shows he’s still there with a magnificent approach to within a couple of feet of the hole.

And over on the 15th, Åberg closes to within a shot of the leaders with a birdie of his own.

Rory’s in the trees again

By Simon Smale

My goodness me. My nerves can barely take it.

McIlroy launches his tee shot and it just starts to tail away to the right, tailing, tailing, tailing and then it rolls into the pine strip.

It’s not a disaster by any means, but another nervy shot.

He just has to get himself back into the right mindset. This is not over.

But those mental demons, oh how they must be knocking on the side of his head, muttering their fateful words in his ears, making him feel like the nightmare of 2011 is just about to repeat itself.

Double bogey for McIlroy on 13, Rose perfect to level the scores

By Simon Smale

(Getty Images)

Oh. My. Goodness.

McIlroy gets his chip right to end within 10 feet of the hole.

But then misses with the putt.

It’s his fourth double bogey of the week.

Rose then birdies his shot on the 16th and, incredibly, we have a three shot swing to leave the Northern Irishman and the Englishman level on 11 under.

Extraordinary scenes.

MASSIVE ERROR FROM McILROY!

By Simon Smale

(Getty Images)

Oh my word, Rory McIlroy has just missed badly with his approach shot to the 13th green, hitting the edge of the deep ditch in front of the green and the ball rolls back into it!

Augusta National holds his breath in shock!

That is a genuine shocker from McIlroy.

A bogey would be a great outcome from here.

As he tries to salvage something out of that, Justin Rose has nailed his approach on the 16th.

Rose moves to within three with a birdie on the 15th

By Simon Smale

Englishman Justin Rose is still keeping that pressure on Rory McIlroy, even as Bryson DeChambeau falls out of contention.

He has birdied the 15th and is now just three shots behind.

He’s five under for the day, a superb final round from Rose, who has twice finished second at Augusta, in 2015 and 2017.

The South Africa-born Englishman has had a legacy of coming close in majors, only winning one, the 2013 US Open.
