Two people have been arrested after armed police responded to an incident in which a car was hit by gunshots.

South Wales Police said a vehicle on the A48 in Morriston, Swansea, sustained damage “consistent with a firearms discharge” on Friday.

A 41-year-old man from Llansamlet, Swansea, had been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, while a 16-year-old boy, also from Llansamlet, had been arrested on suspicion of affray.

The force said officers were still investigating and that it had been declared a critical incident.

Residents have been told to avoid the area and events, including a local firework display, have been cancelled.

Video circulating online shows police officers next to a stationary car that appears to have been struck by a shotgun blast on Clase Road near an Asda superstore.

A National Police Air Service helicopter was circling the area but has since returned to base.

South Wales Police said the incident was ongoing, with road closures in place.

Ch Supt Stephen Jones said: “A policing presence will be visible in the area whilst this investigation is ongoing.”

“It is important that people avoid the area so we can effectively deal with this incident and return the area to normality.”

The local football club, Morriston Town AFC, cancelled a planned firework display on Friday.

“Unfortunately, the police have advised due to an issue ongoing, the event has to be cancelled. With immediate effect,” it said in a social media post, advising people to stay at home.
