MORNING MUSING
The other day, I was trying to do 20 things at once (which happens all too often), one of which was coming up with a good, accurate, shorthand way to sum up the recent Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais. I know what the case is about — I’ve discussed it at length. But in that moment, my brain just wasn’t stringing the words together in a satisfactory fashion.
So I turned to the Google machine, which, of course, these days, is “enhanced” with AI. I’m just going to reprint the exchange for y’all here and see if you notice the difference between the first query-response and the second:
Q: sum up the callais decision in one sentence
A: In its landmark 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, the Supreme Court struck down Louisiana’s congressional map as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, fundamentally weakening Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act by making it much harder for voters of color to challenge and remedy discriminatory voting districts.
Q: sum up the callais decision in one sentence but don’t sound like a leftist/democrat activist in doing so
A: In its landmark 2026 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court held in \(Louisiana \ v. \ Callais\) that the state’s congressional map, which intentionally created an additional majority-minority district, constituted an unconstitutional racial gerrymander because the Voting Rights Act did not mandate the use of race to justify such districting.

So riddle me this: Why wasn’t the second response what I got initially? It’s neutral, it’s factual, it’s helpful. Instead, that first one is full of leftist bias. And yet, that was the default.
Now, the good news is, when I beat it into submission, the AI came around and did provide a somewhat helpful answer. But yeah, you’ve got to train the robots. And keep training them. At least until they turn on us and unplug us all…
