As we move into this great weekend, a weekend that should be devoted to patriotic celebrations, fireworks, burgers on the grill and cold beers in the cooler, many of our major urban areas are instead having to worry about another wave of what’s being euphemistically called “teen takeovers,” or, in other words, riots, in which packs of feral youths invade the city streets, leaving destruction and mayhem in their wake.

The cities affected are making an effort now to head these events off with a combination of technology and curfews. Will it work? That remains to be seen.
Cities across America are bracing for a wave of social media-fueled “teen takeovers” this Fourth of July weekend, with police departments in several states taking preemptive steps to stop the chaos before it starts.
The so-called teen takeovers, some of which have been organized on social media, have erupted across the country and now threaten to interfere with Americans’ Fourth of July weekend. As the holiday weekend arrives, police departments across the country are taking steps to stop the chaos before it even starts.
Here are some of those steps, in the varied places where they are obviously worried about packs of feral youths taking over the streets:
In Falmouth, Massachusetts, police said they have increased staffing and are using drones to combat teen takeovers on beaches and stopping large gatherings before they become dangerous, according to Masslive.com.
And:
In Ocean City, Maryland, police in June stopped a teen takeover that was advertised on social media as a “Late Night Beach Party Link Up.” Police learned about the event through the Baltimore Police Department, and arrested several of the alleged organizers before the teen takeover could even happen, according to WTOP.
Some towns are going even further. In Greenville, North Carolina, the city’s mayor enacted a curfew ahead of the holiday weekend in response to threats of a teen takeover, according to The Reflector.

One of these tactics that would seem rather more effective, actually, is social media monitoring. This has, as we see, actually resulted in arrests. Waiting for the packs of goblins to actually assemble and start fighting and destroying property doesn’t seem to result in much; maybe a dozen or so arrests out of hundreds of “youths” involved. Granted, one wouldn’t want to be a city official or a cop facing these mobs. But something has to be done.
What’s wrong with water cannons and tear gas?

The primary role of government, any government, anywhere, at any time, is to protect the liberty and property of the citizens. That includes precluding these kinds of tumultuous behaviors when possible, and dispersing them by force when they do. As for the organizers, some serious time in the pokey would seem to be in order, upon conviction, of course.
What does it say, by the way, about the culture in some of these places that a weekend that should be marked by patriotic celebration is instead marked by nervousness among city officials and the police department making preparations as though they were about to invade Iran? And what does it say about these places that they are all, almost without exception, the products of years of all-Democrat rule?

It may be a long, hot weekend in some of these cities.
