Will the last remaining moderates in the Democratic Party please raise their hands?

If we ask that question at a hypothetical national gathering of Democratic politicians, you might see two hands raised, both from Pennsylvania: Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator John Fetterman (D-PA). That’s got to be concerning to them and to whatever moderate Democrats are out there in the voting public, because they are watching their party being hijacked by the nutcase communist wing of the party, and that’s not a recipe for success.

Speaking with host Dana Bash on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, Governor Shapiro issued a pretty stark warning to his fellow Dems.

Dana Bash: There is Darializa Avila Chevalier, she was a PhD candidate at Columbia, an organizer, she called for the abolition of prisons, open borders, end to deportations, even of people convicted of violent crimes. She attended a pro-Palestinian rally on October 8th, 2023. Um, a rally that reportedly featured some real antisemitic rhetoric justifying the attack. How do you feel as a Democrat about someone with those views being in the United States Congress?

Governor Shapiro: Well, her district voted for her. But I have profound differences from that particular candidate, based on the citations that you read there. And she’s not someone who, you know, seemingly, I would agree with on many things, or that we share similar values. She ran on the Democratic ticket, I guess as a socialist, her voters in that district determined that she was the one they wanted representing (them.)

Dana Bash: What does that tell you about your party?

Governor Shapiro: I think that what our party has to go through, that will be very healthy, and something that we’ve not really done since the 1992 elections, is to have a battle over what we believe in.

He’s not wrong. But it may be a case of too little, too late; there may well be too few moderates left in the party for it to retain what we might call a sane wing of the Democratic Party. Between a pandemic of Trump Derangement Syndrome and some startling takeovers by the communist wing of the party, the old guard sure seems to be running scared and embracing policies that they rejected only a few years ago.

New Poll Confirms That Democrats Really Are All-In on Democratic Socialists

A New York Post piece on the matter points out:

Shapiro is widely seen as a comparatively moderate figure within the Democratic Party, though unlike Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), the Pennsylvania governor is careful about picking fights with the far left.

Chevalier campaigned heavily against Israel, an issue that will likely become a problem for Shapiro if he runs for the Democratic presidential nod in 2028.

Prediction: Shapiro won’t run. He won’t, for the reasons pointed out above: The last few remaining sane Democrats are becoming increasingly wary, and too many of the old guard are embracing the lunatics. The fringe in the Democratic Party may not be the fringe anymore. It’s as William Butler Yeats wrote:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.

The Democrats’ center cannot hold any longer. And the communist wing does indeed intend to loose anarchy upon the world.

The problem these few moderates face is considerable. The Democratic Party’s communist wing, which is becoming increasingly vocal, is also the antisemitic wing of the party; note Governor Shapiro’s comments about Darializa Avila Chevalier attending an antisemitic, pro-Palestine rally only a day after the October 7th atrocities that Hamas visited upon Israel. That has to be making the governor, who is Jewish, more than a little concerned.

The governor’s right about the Democrats needing to undergo some serious self-analysis. The problem is, the lunatic wing doesn’t seem much interested in that conversation; they are convinced they are right, with the near-religious fervor one sees all too often with committed commies.

Could the Democratic Party go the way of the Whigs? Could it shatter into two or more smaller parties? The next few election cycles may well tell that tale.

Editor’s Note: The Democrat Party has never been less popular as voters reject its globalist agenda.
