Signing off for the 2026 trade period
And that’s where we’re going to leave things for this year’s AFL trade period.
Just a reminder that clubs can still exchange draft picks from now all the way through to and including draft night, which kicks off on Thursday, November 19.
Thank you all once again for keeping both Dean and I entertained over some really boring days, but glad we all got there in one piece in the end.
Catch you all next time!
Bombers thrilled after sealing Coleman deal at 11th hour
Essendon list boss Matt Rosa is one of the last list managers to roll through and he’s evidently stoked after landing the plane on the Kiddy Coleman deal.
On conversations with Coleman and his family:
“Really excited to get Kiddy to the club.
“We had a great meeting with him and his partner Rylie last week and he was really keen to get to the club.
“We know he’s going to bring a lot of excitement.
“He wanted to play in the big games and we do have a proud Indigenous history at the football club, so he was really keen to be a part of that.
“He can’t wait to get the family down and he’s really keen to get stuck into it.”
On the “tense” negotiations with Brisbane today:
“We were working hard, it was quite tense.
“In the end, Kiddy’s manager, Tim, he was also working really hard and he felt reasonably confident we’d be able to get a deal done within the last half an hour and we’re really grateful that we were able to get there.”
On the additions of Coleman and Jack Bowes as experienced players:
“It was important to bring in a couple of players that really wanted to come to the football club, that are really keen to come in and help the young guys, but also perform on the field.
“That was really important for us. We’ve brought in a couple of quality characters and quality players that will improve our list.”
On how close they came to a Gryan Miers deal:
“We enquired about Gryan really for a couple of weeks just to see where he was at.
“We had a few brief talks today just to see where Gryan was at and where he sat with Geelong, but we worked out pretty quickly today that that wasn’t going to move too far.”
“[Geelong’s asking price] was a higher pick than we were looking to give up.
“We like Gryan as a player, but we also understood he was a contracted player and we were keen to push forward with getting Kiddy into the club.
“We were able to get enough information to be comfortable [with Miers’s knee].”
Crows happy to retain Murray despite Kangaroos bids
Nick Murray was the man left stranding as the buzzer sounded, and while he may be frustrated, Adelaide is thrilled to hold onto him.
Jarryd Roughead playing some hardball in his first trade period as a list boss.
Here’s Roughead on the Murray talks:
“To North’s credit, they kept trying.
“I said from the start of the week that with Jordon Butts leaving, it was going to be very hard to try and entertain an offer that would turn our head.
“We’re pumped that Nick Murray stays with us and is going to be a part of our backline in the future.
“I’ve had conversations with him over the last couple of days and he knows how much we value him at the football club.
On whether Murray would struggle to reintegrate:
“I don’t think so. With the calibre of person Nick is, he understood that this was a possibility.
“I’ve been speaking to him throughout the whole trade period, so it is not as if he didn’t understand what was happening.”
The thought process behind holding onto Murray:
“We’re in a win-now phase, so losing two key defenders, that tests our depth.
“If we’re in a win-now phase, why would we give away two key defenders?”
On the late deal sending Luke Pedlar to Port:
“[The deal was done] out of respect to Luke.
“We wish him all the best for everything he has done at Adelaide over six years and hopefully he can get going and all the best to him at Port Adelaide.”
Lions ‘satisfied’ despite losing McLachlan and Coleman
Brisbane certainly played hardball on the final day as they looked to hold onto Keidean Coleman and Will McLachlan.
Lions list manager Dom Ambrogio has gained a reputation of being a tough negotiator and he lived up to it in the end.
On trading McLachlan to Melbourne:
“We were satisfied with what we got.
“Obviously, we really rate Will, think he’s going to be a great player.
“At the end of the day, we had to make the best out of a difficult situation, I thought we did that.”
On the deal to send Coleman to Essendon:
“We’re satisfied [with the trade return].
“Look, it wasn’t one we wanted to drive.
“At the end of the day, we did it for Kiddy and his agent was certainly quite insistent. He got stitched up a bit alphabetically because he had to run between Brisbane and Essendon, it would’ve been worse if he had to deal with West Coast, I guess.
“There was always the danger of that [losing Coleman in 12 months’ time as a free agent].
On whether he is expecting Coleman to be fit next year:
“He played a lot of senior footy this year, he was never dropped.
“He played the first 13 games, then missed with a concussion and then played some VFL footy after that.
“We were going OK so it was hard for him to get back in the team.
“I fully expect him to play a lot of senior footy, and it wasn’t something we wanted to do.”
Rawlings speaks after failing to secure Murray deal
Here’s Kangaroos list boss Brady Rawlings after a successful trade period that ultimately fell a little short on the final day:
“We would’ve seen the trade periods as a really successful one if we were able to get two players we prioritised through the door.
“When you’re looking at contracted players it can always be different.
“We had a crack and Adelaide said no, and he’s their player, fair enough.
“We clearly had to look at a few things to throw at Adelaide, most of that was trying get a good pick in this year’s draft.
“You’re looking at different clubs to switch picks with, it’s just a really tough market to get something inside 20 with the new rules.”
On whether the club overpaid for Nick Blakey, resulting in a failure to get Nick Murray’s deal done:
“Nick was obviously our No.1 priority through all this.
“Once he indicated he wanted to come to our club, we were going to do everything we could to bring him through the doors.
“We still felt there was enough currency there to get Nick Murray done, but it proved not to be in the end.”
On whether the Roos will chase Murray again next year:
“We rate him very highly as a player.
“A lot can happen within another 12 months, but we’ll be fishing in that same sort of market next year.
“We threw everything we had.”
Rawlings finished off by saying there was no frustration with Adelaide over the failed deal, given Murray was a contracted player.
West Coast’s Matt Clarke has come through

West Coast’s list boss Matt Clarke has just spoken to the media after getting the Trent Rivers and Jack Viney deals over the line.
Another detail that is coming out about the Viney deal: Pending AFL approval he will sign a four-year deal at West Coast, the first two as a player and the second two as a coach.
Clarke on Viney and Rivers:
Never confident until it’s done, but we felt like we were working in good faith with the management team.
Our strategy over the last few trade periods was to keep attracting high-quality people and players from successful football programs.
On the attraction of Viney:
First and foremost it was about what his footy ability could bring to the team. We’re pretty confident and Jack’s pretty confident in his body. The information we have is that Jack will return to some really strong footy.
On potentially trading up the draft order:
I think most teams are trying to do that, and that will still occur going into the pick trading period and trading on the [draft] night. We’ll make sure we’re still armed with some picks to be able to do that.
A hectic final 20 minutes

We kinda saw it coming, but that was a wild finish. Four or five deals done in the last five minutes, but one big one that didn’t quite get there.
Chris is lurking around Docklands still trying to catch some list bosses on their way out. We’re hoping to hear from Brady Rawlings as well as some reps from Essendon, Melbourne and West Coast.
Who do we think did the best out of deadline day? I think Essendon’s Kiddy Coleman deal is a good one. I think West Coast did well to land Jack Viney and Trent Rivers will keeping hold of pick 23. I think Adelaide were brave to stare down strong North Melbourne offers and say no.
Another trade that’s just beaten the buzzer!
YOU THOUGHT WE WERE DONE DIDN’T YOU? YOU THOUGHT WRONG!!
Hawthorn has done another deal right on the buzzer, sending Bodie Ryan to Melbourne.
How about the Dees adding two players and shedding two players inside the last 10 minutes?
Talk about cramming!
10 more minutes to go in the trade period
Not a lot of time left for wheeling and dealing now!
The pacing between the war rooms seems to be intensifying.
Trent Rivers and Jack Viney to Eagles all but done
Ryan Daniels from Channel Seven in Perth has confirmed that Viney and Rivers are set to be Eagles.
Details still to be confirmed.
Phones are ringing across the league
Dom Ambrogio of Brisbane is on the phone. Jarryd Roughead of Adelaide is on the phone. Brady Rawlings is in the Port Adelaide rooms again. Tom Petroro is charging around everywhere.
Coleman. Murray. Rivers. Viney. Pedlar. Goater. McLachlan. 18 minutes to go.
