
Shohrat is an ethnic Uyghur who served as chairman of the government of the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region between 2014 and 2021.

Beijing has denied the accusations and says its policies in the region are designed to counter extremism and terrorism.
In September 2021, Shohrat left his post in Xinjiang and took up his post in the national legislature the following month. He was last seen in public when he met a delegation from Azerbaijan in Beijing in late May.
Shohrat also met Martin Chungong, the secretary general of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, on Thursday before the seminar, according to Xinhua.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union is an international organisation with 179 member parliaments. China’s NPC joined the organisation in 1984.

Chungong is from Cameroon and has been the secretary general of the union since 2014. He is the first African and non-European to be the organisation’s chief executive.
