If you ask any American who is a close observer of politics about the current level of political violence in the nation, the likely answer is going to be that they have never seen anything like it in their lifetime. Americans, especially on the left, seem to no longer be able to agree to disagree; they must completely destroy those they see as their political opponents. Now, there are new numbers in to prove that.

In 2026 alone, the Secret Service has investigated 10,000 threats to various protectees. That is an increase of 40 percent from 2025. Not surprisingly, the Secret Service has also handled nearly 10 times as many mental health interventions, both voluntary and involuntary, involving those who are allegedly making threats.

The Secret Service uses several behaviors, like obsessive fixation, stalking, paranoia, and delusions, as tools to evaluate threat assessments. Other actions besides mental health behaviors that will get the agency’s attention are things like ideological grievances, lone actors, and foreign threats. According to the Secret Service, these have all increased, with many originating online. Every threat must be taken seriously while they determine if the individual involved is planning an actual attack.
Sean Curran is the Director of the U.S. Secret Service and should be a familiar face to most Americans. He was part of President Donald Trump’s security detail in Butler, Pennsylvania, when Thomas Crooks attempted to assassinate Trump at a rally in July of 2024. He said very bluntly:

“The numbers are numbers that this agency and certainly I have never seen in my 24-year career. The environment has become very volatile, and that’s just across the board. The threat picture and environment is as large as I’ve ever seen it.”
In addition to the President, Vice President, and their families, the Secret Service is responsible for the safety of anyone in the presidential line of succession.

Among the most recent foiled attacks by the Secret Service were the attempted shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April and the UFC 250 event at the White House on June 14. Arrests were made in both attacks. But as the rescheduled dinner is set for Friday at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, D.C., Curran stated, “We do expect bad people to show up. It’s just a reality of where we are.”

While the Secret Service deals with foreign threats from places like Iran, there is a healthy amount of homegrown threats. Political violence from the left has skyrocketed. From the murder in cold blood of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the violence largely seems to be going one way, from the left towards conservatives, and more people on the left appear to be comfortable with it if it achieves their goal. It’s those same mostly young people who don’t appear to have the mental capacity to interact with someone who disagrees with them.
