Massachusetts officials removed a teenage girl from her Catholic parents’ home after the family refused to call her a boy, according to the parents’ account and Fox News reporting.
Joseph and Arlene Kutzko say the state has held their 17-year-old daughter, identified in public reporting as Sophie, since DCF removed her in December 2024. The parents say staff at Algonquin Regional High School began socially transitioning her without their knowledge, then reported the family to the Department of Children and Families.
The Kutzkos’ fight now runs through Massachusetts courtrooms.
Fox News Radio reported that DCF has guardianship and that a restraining order bars the parents and their older son from contacting Sophie. The outlet reported that a physical-abuse allegation against Joseph Kutzko was deemed unfounded, but DCF retained custody after the family refused to use a male name and male pronouns.
The same report says DCF sought court authority to administer high-dose testosterone. A judge has temporarily stopped that treatment while the case proceeds.
The parents and their lawyer, Vernadette Broyles, say DCF also denied their daughter access to Sunday Mass and placed her in a boys’ dormitory. Their next hearing is scheduled for Oct. 29.
