President Trump signed an Executive Order Monday designed to increase the confidence of American families in the vaccine schedule recommended for their children.

With a flick of the pen, the president ushered in a new era that will, according to a White House fact sheet, “maximize parental choices over vaccinations for their children and align three categories of childhood immunizations with scientific evidence and best practices from peer, developed countries.”
“Effective immediately,” the president commented during the signing ceremony, “my administration is recognizing gold standard childhood vaccine recommendations for only 11 core vaccinations against the most serious and dangerous diseases, along with the MMR, which hopefully will be split up.”
.@POTUS: For far too long, America has recommended more childhood vaccines than any peer nation, and even twice as many doses as some European countries. In many cases, we were requiring 72 jabs for our beautiful, healthy, lovely, delicate little children. Effective immediately, my administration’s recognizing Gold Standard childhood vaccine recommendations for only 11 core vaccinations against the most serious and dangerous diseases, along with the MMR. We want it in three separate vaccinations, given at separate times.

President Trump, who was flanked by Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Jay Bhattacharya, added, “Parents can still choose to give their children all of the vaccinations if they wish. There are some groups that have virtually no problem with autism, and they, you know, I have to say this: they’re groups that aren’t big into the world of vaccines.”
When it was his turn to speak, Kennedy, who has previously vowed to find out what causes autism in children, hit on that angle of the vaccine announcement, saying, “We’re only noticing [autism] in kids who were born around 1989 or after. The older generations are not seeing those increases. So something happened in the mid ‘90s that changed our children, and it has to be an environmental exposure. You need an environmental toxin.”
.@SecKennedy: “We will preserve access to vaccines, strengthen safety monitoring, expand research, give doctors and parents better information, and restore informed consent and parental choice to their rightful place in American medicine.” https://t.co/kWCiARABl2 pic.twitter.com/DaH8hsJQuC

Bhattacharya, who was fresh off a Sunday morning dustup with Face the Nation’s Margaret Brennan over what she called “vaccine misinformation” – said the administration’s new directive “restores a healthy relationship between public health and parents.”

.@NIHDirector_Jay: “What this does is it restores the autonomy of families and parents to make good decisions for their kids. It allows and continues to emphasize the importance of science in the recommendations about vaccines, and fundamentally restores a healthy relationship between public health and parents.”
Bhattacharya really hits at the crux of the matter – American families are wary and distrustful after years of government mandates and one-size-fits-all recommendations. Reaffirming to parents that they have a number of options is a good first step toward earning that trust back.
