Ryan O’Shea, 21, was driving home after a hockey game when a wrong-way pickup struck him head-on on I-91. DHS told Border Hawk the driver had twice been removed and later returned.

University of New Haven hockey captain Ryan O’Shea, 21, was killed when a wrong-way pickup struck his car head-on on Interstate 91 after a hockey game.

Connecticut State Police reporting cited by News 12 identifies the pickup driver as Guillermo Carmona-Lopez, 31, of Bridgeport. O’Shea’s car then hit two other vehicles. He died at the scene; Carmona-Lopez was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The University of New Haven confirmed O’Shea was a criminal justice major, team captain, and aspiring police officer who had interned with the NYPD.

DHS told Border Hawk that Carmona-Lopez was arrested by Border Patrol after unlawfully entering the United States in May 2013 and removed under an expedited order. DHS said he reentered, was arrested again that month, received a final removal order on May 30, 2013, and later returned at an unknown time and place.

That is the federal account behind the “twice-deported” record. It does not establish fault for the crash. As of the latest local reporting, Carmona-Lopez remained hospitalized, and no charge had been announced.

A young captain with a future in law enforcement is dead after a driver went the wrong way down I-91. The removal orders did not keep that driver out of the country.
