Live: Turner overcomes challenging build-up to win second Paris gold in tight finish

Bridget Murphy blew a kiss to her teammates as she left the arena after a really solid performance in the individual freestyle event grade II.

The Paralympic debutant received a score of 70.154%.

As she was the event’s first competitor, she currently sits in the gold medal position.

Ben Wright remains in seventh spot in the men’s up to 88kg final, he improved on his first effort, lifting 192kg.

China’s Yan Panpan is looking good for the gold, he’s on top with a Paralympic record 235kg lift.

Australia’s Bridget Murphy and her horse Penmain Promise are first up in the individual freestyle event grade II.

This event is judged on a combination of artistic expression and technical skills.

Murphy has just started her performance to an upbeat, electronic take on Men at Work’s Land Down Under.

Australia’s Stella Barton and her horse Lord Lamarque have finished seventh in their para equestrian freestyle grade I event.

Barton performed first and put forward a creative and technical display to earn a score of 73.960%.

After winning his individual event earlier in the Games, Latvia’s Rihards Snikus took gold with a mammoth score of 82.487%.

Italy’s Sara Morganti got closest to him with a score of 81.407 and Great Britain’s Mari Durward-Akhurst took bronze.

Ben Wright was the third athlete up and successfully lifted 184kg.

So that puts him in seventh out of ten competitors after everyone’s first attempts, with three rounds in total and only each athlete’s best lift counted.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, athletes are lying down, they must remove the bar from the rack, lower it to their chest, pause, then lift until their arms are fully extended, and when given the green light from the referee, return the bar to the rack.

So in summary – it is pretty impressive to watch!

Like the Para canoeists, Ben Wright is another athlete who’s had to wait a long time to get some action in Paris.

He’s in the final of the men’s up to 88kg which is just about to start, and it’s a big moment for the West Australian in his Paralympic debut. 

It has been a BIG few hours for Australia with seven medals added to our tally, including two breathtaking golds.

We still have Aussies in medal events in equestrian and powerlifting tonight before athletics and swimming finals early tomorrow morning (AEST).

But for now let’s take a deep breath and gear up for the rest of day ten!

James Turner belts out the national anthem with so much pride and passion after receiving his second gold medal in Paris, this time for the 100m T36.

And he’s fighting back the tears when he speaks to the Nine Network.

“Words can’t describe it, so much from so many people has gone into this, I’m just too emotional,” he said.

“I know I’ve given my coach many sleepless nights, Iryna’s (Dvoskina) worked so hard to help me get here, so many people have come together to get me here and to be able to not let them down this time has been fantastic.”

It’s more para table tennis heartbreak for Australia.

Lina Lei, the world number one and gold medallist from Tokyo, just never quite got going in her WS9 semifinal against China’s Guiyan Xiong.

Xiong turned it on in that fifth and final game – she seemed to have an answer for every ferocious forehand Lei sent her way.

Xiong took the game 11-6 and the match 3-2.

It’s bronze for Lina Lei in the WS9 – still an awesome effort.

While Curtis McGrath always appears so calm and in control, these Games haven’t been easy for him on a personal level.

In July, his wife Rachel gave birth to their first child, Monty, but he needed open heart surgery immediately.

McGrath had to leave them both behind only a few weeks after the birth.

The new dad teared up when telling the Nine Network how challenging it’s been.

“I’m not here just to represent Australia, I’m here to represent my family and they mean so much to me.

“It’s been hard so it’s important that I did it for them too. 

“The goodbye that we had on the tenth of August was one of the hardest I’ve ever had to do.

“We’re just out here doing sport so it’s not actually that important but when we’re representing people and countries and our family members it means more.

“It’s special to have this accolade and I’m just proud to represent everyone involved in this team and my performance and my life.”

Australia’s Taylor Gosens lost to Kazakhstan’s Zarina Raifova in the repêchage stage of the women’s +70kg J2 event.

Raifova triumphed 10-0 to move through to the bronze medal contest B bout.

She seemed a lot more up for it in that fourth game.

More spring in her step, more sizzle in her shot.

It was an epic rally to secure the Australian an 11-6 win in the fourth game.

It’s now 2-2 all and we’re headed to a fifth game to decide who progresses to the gold medal match.

Oh no, it’s looking like it could be more para table tennis heartbreak for Australia.

Lina Lei has been far from her imperious best and she has lost the second game of her WS9 semifinal against China’s Guiyan Xiong.

Xiong has won the third game 11-6 to go 2-1 up.

Lei must win this game to keep her golden aspirations alive.

In comparison with the raucousness on show during Lin Ma’s earlier match with France’s Lucas Diddier, the crowd watching Australia’s Lina Lei’s semifinal with China’s Guiyan Xiong is positively sedate.

Neither player has really got into the match yet, with errors littering the first two games.

Xiong took the second 11-8 to make it 1 game all.

Australia’s Lisa Martin has placed sixth in the individual freestyle event Grade V.

Martin, on board Vilaggio, posted a score of 71.905.

Belgium’s Michèle George (Best of 8) won gold with a score a 81.470.

Dylan Littlehales left his surge late to win silver in the men’s kayak single 200m KL3 final. 

Algeria’s Brahim Guendouz led from the start to win gold, while Littlehales had to put in a big effort with his final strokes to secure the silver.

He was just 0.07 seconds ahead of Brazil’s bronze medallist Miqueias Elias Rodrigues.

That’s Littlehales’ first Paralympic medal, at his third Games.
