Earlier this week El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly voted to abolish presidential term limits. That could allow President Nayib Bukele, to seek reelection indefinitely, but what does it mean for the country’s fight against organized crime and the rule of law?

Since 2022, Bukele has overseen a ruthless gang crackdown, using emergency powers to all but eliminate the MS13 and Barrio 18 in El Salvador. But while over 85,000 people have been detained, few have stood trial and due process has effectively been abandoned.
