Emma Coronel to be released from prison, U.S. authorities confirm
Emma Coronel, wife of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán, will be released from prison on Wednesday, following her arrest in 2021 on drug trafficking charges, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons (BOP).
Coronel, the mother of two of the Mexican drug lord’s daughters, is currently serving a three-year sentence in a low-security federal institution in the Los Angeles city in the Mexican border state of California.
On its website, the BOP published a brief fact sheet referring to Coronel’s release on Wednesday, September 13, although it did not provide further details.
The 34-year-old U.S.-born woman was arrested in February 2021 at Dulle International Airport in Washington on charges of distributing cocaine, heroin and other drugs.
As part of a plea deal, the wife of El Chapo, also imprisoned in the United States, admitted to acting as a courier between Guzman and other members of the Sinaloa Cartel while he was held at the Altiplano, where he entered in 2014.
Coronel’s legal representatives did not immediately respond to a Reuters request about the possible release of her client.
It is unclear whether Coronel has drug trafficking charges in Mexico or other crimes.
