LONG JUMP: Aussies struggling to qualify
Samantha Dale is struggling a little in Group B.
She went 6.18m in the first jump and then no-jumped the second. She needs a big one in her last jump.
Delta Amidzovski, meanwhile, also no-jumped her second jump so needs something special in her last effort.

100m: National record no surprise for Lewis
Torrie Lewis has just been speaking to ABC Sport’s David Mark in Tokyo.
“I’m really happy. I’m very satisfied with this and excited for tomorrow,” she says.
“I know it probably sounds a bit cocky … but my times in training indicated that I could.
“I just needed to come out here and get rid of the nerves and do what I’ve been doing in training.”
Great to hear that confidence.

100m HEATS: Ella Connolly finishes seventh in her heat
Unlikely for Connolly to qualify unfortunately, finishing in seventh after a very good start.
She just faded in the second half of the run.
She ends up with a 11.43.
100m HEATS: TORRIE LEWIS INTO THE SEMIFINAL!

Brilliant from Torrie Lewis!
It’s an Australian record too! 11.08!
A superb start, a brilliant transition and then a powerful finish that takes her into the top three!
That’s a superb from from Torrie Lewis.

She looks so thrilled too! That’s awesome to see!
Sha’Carri Richardson finished first in that heat, but was not a long way ahead of Lewis, finishing with 11.03, while Shericka Jackson ran 11.04.

100m HEATS: Torrie Lewis set to run
World Athletics is having some issues with its live results at the moment – which is not too helpful.
But rest assured Torrie Lewis is set to run in the heats.
She needs to run well here to qualify in a heat that contains the defending champion Sha’Carri Richardson – who is in the lane next to her in this third heat.

POLE VAULT QUALIFICATION: Marschall ready to fly
The men’s pole vault is about to get underway, featuring Aussie Kurtis Marschall.
He looked pretty relaxed in his instagram story and says he’s ready to “empty the tank”.
Good to see!

We’ll keep you posted as to how he goes.

100m HEATS: Rizzo unlikely to qualify for the semi’s
Melissa Jefferson-Wooden gets through first without getting into second gear.
Very easy for the American, running 10.99 seconds.
Kiwi Zoe Hobbs finished in second place and looked really good.
Bree Rizzo just never got going, unfortunately, a step slow out the blocks and was never in contention.
She ran 11.45.

100m HEATS: Three Aussies in action
Time for the first of the women’s 100m heats, with three Aussies in action.
Stawell Gift winner Bree Rizzo (Heat 1, Lane 8), Torrie Lewis (Heat 3, Lane 8) and Ella Connolly (Heat 5, Lane 2) will race in these heats.
First 3 of each heat (Q) plus 3 fastest times (q) qualify for the semi-finals.

LONG JUMP: Amidzovski gets a legal jump in first up
Delta Amidzovski has jumped out to 6.28m with her first jump.
That’s the shortest of any legal jump in Group A so far.
Each athlete only gets three jumps, so there is not a lot of time to improve, which she will need to do to qualify.
Samantha Dale has also had her first jump

3,000m STEEPLECHASE: Lamecha Girma goes down hard again!

Another athlete hitting the deck and it’s the world record holder Lamecha Girma.
He is the Ethiopian runner who fell so hard at the Paris Olympics that he knocked himself out on the track and needed to be taken to hospital.
This isn’t as bad as that one, thankfully – and wasn’t his fault either as he tripped over Carlos San Martin – and he’s back up and in the pack again with the race not yet at half distance.
But what are the chances of lightning striking twice?
He has recovered enough to qualify in second place.
3,000m STEEPLECHASE: Kiwi crashes hard but still qualifies!

Oh that’s not good!
Kiwi runner Geordie Beamish went down so hard heading into the final lap but picked himself up and still managed to catch up with the leading pack and then overtook them to finish second!
He took down the Canadian Jean-Simon Desgagnés as well, only he didn’t manage to get back on.
“Jean-Simon fell down and I took a good roll,” he tells World Athletics.
“I couldn’t think for about 20 seconds and then I got up and said to myself that I need to keep going.
“The rest of the field didn’t get far away and to be honest, I was pretty confident that I could catch them.”
Good news for Desgagnés though. He has been reinstated though because the crash was not his fault.
Oh, and Beamish finishes with a bow. Amazing.

LONG JUMP: Delta and Dale leaping for Australia
Qualifying time for the women’s long jump, featuring none other than Delta Amidzovsky and Samantha Dale.
Amidzovsky is in Group A, while Dale is in Group B.
In order to qualify automatically, both women will need to jump 6.75m, which is well in excess of Amidzovsky’ s PB of 6.58m, and just 3cm further than Dale has ever jumped before.
If 12 athletes don’t jump 6.75m, then it’s the 12 athletes who have leaped furthest who qualify.
3,000m STEEPLECHASE: Trippas fails to qualify for the final

Such a shame for Ed Trippas, who finishes last in his heat.
That back injury he came into the event carrying was clearly bad enough to really affect him.
He was looking in pretty good shape through the first half of the race, but really started to struggle as the pace went up.
He dropped to the back of the pack with two laps to go and then dropped a long way behind the contenders with little over 600m to go.
Edmund Serem, the 17-year-old Kenyan, qualified fastest in that heat – and covered his face as he crossed the line. I love it.

3,000m STEEPLECHASE: Heat one is underway
Expect this to be a tactical race.
What time he gets is meaningless really because it’s just the first five in each heat.
Trippas is towards the front of a very congested field through the first lap as the whole field safely negotiates the first couple of laps.

3,000m STEEPLECHASE: Trippas aiming to qualify
So, first up for Australia this evening is Ed Trippas, which is not perhaps the most auspicious name for a man about to run 3,000m with four hurdles per lap in front of him…
Trippas, the 26-year-old from Kurraba Point in New South Wales, is coached by Craig Mottram at Bankstown Sports.
He is going in the first of three heats.
SBS are reporting that he has had some issues with his back over the last few days and so is not coming into this race in the best of shape.
The first five of each heat qualify for the final, which will be on Monday.
Australia’s best place in this event ever was Shaun Creighton‘s ninth place in 1993.

SHOT PUT: Kiwi qualifies first

No Aussie men are competing in the shot put at these championships, so we may as well adopt one of our cousins from across the ditch.
Kiwi thrower Tom Walsh put the shot 21.74m in qualifying this morning, the furthest of anyone and well in excess of the automatic qualification mark of 21.35.
The two-time Olympic bronze medallist (Rio and Tokyo), three-time indoor champion (2016, 2018 and 2025) and four-time Diamond League final winner will be hoping to add to the world championship gold he won in 2017.
Just don’t tell him how the All Blacks went tonight in case it puts him off…

4x400M MIXED RELAY: Aussies miss final

Disappointment for the Aussies in the men’s 4x400m mixed relay, where Australia missed out on the final, only able to run the 10th-fastest time.
The Aussies finished in fourth in their heat behind Low Country rivals Belgium and Netherlands and Poland.
Only the first three from each heat qualified automatically, plus the two next fastest teams, both of which came from the first heat
Australia’s team was Luke van Ratingen, Mia Gross, Thomas Reynolds and Carla Bull.

DISCUS: Taryn Gollshewsky misses out on final

In this morning’s discus qualifying, Aussie Taryn Gollshewsky fell short of qualifying for the final.
Needing to throw 64 metres or be in the top 12 to make the final, the Aussie came up well short, throwing 54.98m to finish 34th out of 37.
She would have needed to throw in excess of 62.65m to make the top 12, which is in excess of her personal best of 62.36m and way further than her season best of 60.66.
WALKING: Henderson steps up with ninth in 35km walk

First up, some news from the morning, where Rebecca Henderson finished in a hugely credible ninth spot in the women’s 35km race walk.
Olympic medallist Jemima Montag was unable to compete due to hamstring surgery and withdrew last month, but in her absence the 25-year-old Henderson stepped up with her best ever finish in a world level meet.

Fellow Aussies Olivia Sandery and Allanah Pitcher were 14th and 19th respectively.
In the men’s event, Rhydian Cowley came home strongly to finish 11th.

Cowley was competing in his Australian record-equalling sixth world championships.
His teammates Will Thompson (25th) and Mitchell Baker (32nd) also competed.
