While “entertaining” might not be the first word that comes to mind for Californians who are not Democrats and endure living under one-party rule in the Golden State, for those on the outside looking in, it is often the only word that fits. After a questionable primary race between incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, LA Councilwoman and Democratic socialist Nithya Raman, and Spencer Pratt to be mayor of America’s second-largest city, only Bass and Raman remained, and things have only gotten more curious.

Fake Poll Showing Karen Bass’s Lead Over Nithya Raman Now Exposed As Experiment

During the latest mayoral debate on Wednesday night, it was revealed that Raman had hired the same political consulting firm that previously also handled discredited former Maine Senate candidate and Raman’s fellow Democratic socialist, Graham Platner’s ill-fated campaign. The revelation brought loud boos and jeers from the audience of mostly Democrats.

The moderator asked Raman:

“[It was] reported that you’ve hired the same political consulting firm that managed Graham Platner’s campaign in Maine, who had to resign amidst sexual assault allegations. Is that true? And is that the best choice? And why did you make that decision?”

It was here that Raman devolved into a near Kamala-esque word salad, saying:

“Well, I did hire an advertising agency to make my paid ads, who also worked with Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s successful campaign…Here’s what I do want to say, that I do want to win this race. I’ve retained most of my good campaign staff … we’ve made sure to invest in our team, and I hope that we can win this seat, and I’m going to work as hard as I can to win.”

To the moderator’s credit, they followed up by asking, “Did you weigh the pros and cons of being associated with Graham Platner’s campaign?” Raman appeared to stumble over her words more and replied:

“Absolutely. But we wanted to make sure that we were hiring good people to make our ads. We have to get talent to be able to run our team. We we we we weighed the issues.”

At this point, Raman did the only thing she could do: point out near-equally bad judgment from Karen Bass, and point out that an advisor to Bass had done crisis communications work for a company facing questions about a massive LA warehouse fire, raising conflict-of-interest questions.

Fight Agency, the ad firm in question, released a statement saying:

“We decided to make ads for the campaign that actually believes in taking on a broken status quo and a corrupt political establishment to finally make things work in L.A. again.”

The moderator seemed to sum up the whole mess, saying, “I guess it’s a question of judgment.” Truer words may have never been spoken. Nithya Raman thought it would be good judgment to hire a firm that thought it would be good judgment to manage the campaign of a guy who sported a Nazi tattoo, and had to drop out of the Maine Senate race over multiple sexual misconduct allegations and volatile comments.

Sadly, for Angelenos, the decision in November comes down to whose bad judgment is the lesser of two evils.
