Australian surfer Molly Picklum‘s keeping her spirits up, despite her shock early exit at the hands of local hope Johanne Defay.

Picklum was one of Australia’s top hopes in the Tahitian surf, ending the year fifth in the WSL Championship Tour’s shortboard rankings.

Defay bounced back from four stitches in her head after colliding with the reef the day prior to set the tone for the French team while securing a spot in the last 16.

Despite the early exit, Picklum remained upbeat.

“Even though it’s not me, I still want an Aussie to bring home a gold. I’m staying with [fellow Australian] Jack [Robinson], so I’ll be washing his dishes, cooking him breakfast, anything to get him over the line,” Picklum said.

Robinson recorded the biggest wave score of Paris 2024 so far (9.87).

For those playing at home, the surfing this year isn’t being held on the Seine, despite the amount of money the government has spent on improving the water quality.

The surfing this year’s being held a lot close to home, for us at least, on the French Polynesian island of Tahiti.

Round 3 of the surfing’s scheduled to commence at 3:00 tomorrow morning AEST.
