Live: Canterbury honour the spirit of 1995 in clash with Manly

Cherry-Evans hammers a brilliant 40/20 off the back of a Lodge offload and Manly are on the attack for the first time.

They test the Dogs on both sides but Canterbury hold fast before Saab gets wrapped up on the last.

Been a tough opening to the game, both teams playing physical. Burton puts up a bomb and it should be a regulation catch for Saab only he fumbles it!

It bounces for Sam Hughes and he goes all the way to open the scoring! Well in, big man.

Crichton converts from out wide and it’s 6-0 Bulldogs. 

And off we go! Canterbury get us started, running left to right.

Just the one change for Manly, Jake Simpkin is out and Gordon Chan Kum Tong is in on the bench.

Canterbury are 1-17 as named.

Fogarty bangs it long from deep in his own half, it catches the Knights off-guard and Savage gets there first to score. But the replay shows Savage is a couple of metres offside. No try.

That’ll do us – Canberra run out 44-18 winners. 

Timoko claims a high kick, he throws it back inside to Horsburgh who puts a kick in and claims the try. But the Bunker denies the big man, they say he didn’t force it.

Pearce-Paul gets Sasagi high and Canberra will go on the attack again. Fogarty forces a drop out with a good grubber, next set they run it again on the last and Timoko goes over for his second.

Or does he? We go upstairs and Martin looks to have obstructed Cogger….wait, they’re going to give it! That’s a curious one. Cogger was unlikely to get there but I’ve seen plenty of those denied.

Anyway, Fogarty kicks another one and it’s 44-18 Raiders.

Hosking hits Young with a great short ball and he’s through, he finds Stuart in support but the cover drags him down a metre out.

Next play Fogarty kicks it high, the Knights knock it on and Martin dives on it to score! That’s his first NRL try and he’s pumped up about it!

Fogarty converts, Canberra now lead 38-18.

Savage runs behind Timoko ten out from his own line to gift Newcastle a chance at points. They need a try here to stay in touch but McEwan knocks it on.

Fogarty puts up an absolute nightmare of a bomb, Gagai does his best but nobody could catch that! Young dives on it but he’s offside and Canberra get the penalty. They’ll take the two and Fogarty makes no mistake. Raiders lead 32-18.

A big run from Papalii earns Canberra a six again and they’re on the attack. Fogarty serves up a beautiful short ball for Timoko and he pulls through the defence to score! Nice double pump from Fogarty, classy stuff.

The Raiders have started to wear Newcastle down in the middle. Fogarty converts and it’s 30-18 Raiders.

Dom Young makes a bust on a kick return and Hudson Young gets penalised for putting pressure on the neck once he drags him down. Knights on the attack.

Gamble lofts a ball over to Young and he flies for the corner, Strange gets him into touch but he’s penalised for a shoulder charge. More possession for the Knights.

But as they try and line up the left side again Frizell throws a pass to nobody that goes over the sideline. Canberra work it out.

Fogarty kicks it over to Savage, he takes it and offloads it back to Fogarty, Canberra throw it around until Starling knifes through and scores!

We go upstairs, bit to check – the pass from Savage is cleared, now we look to obstruction later in the play but that’s cleared as well. It’s a try to Starling and Canberra are back in front, it’s 24-18 after Fogarty converts.

And we’re halfway home! Canberra kick us off to start the second half.

Canberra run it on the last down their right and get Savage into some space and he scampers over in the corner right on halftime!

Fogarty has the chance to put the Raiders up six, given the wind it’s a very difficult kick – he’s having trouble keeping the ball on the tee cause of the wind.

But he nails it! Superb kick, Raiders lead 18-12. 

There’s only about 20 seconds left until halftime, the Raiders go for a shift down their right as the siren sounds but Fogarty’s ball is intercepted by Hunt and he scores!

What a couple of minutes of action! Gagai converts and it’s 18-all at the break.

Mariota gets pinged for a roll ball and the Knights go down their left again, Savage races up but takes the wrong man and Gagai puts Marzhew over. A poor read from the Raiders winger.

Gagai converts and it’s 12-all in the capital.

Newcastle run it on the last, Marzhew centre-kicks, Weekes can’t field it and Young cleans it up. Raiders drop it out and Fogarty absolutely belts it – the Knights let it bounce and don’t pick it up until it gets to their own 20! They work it up field and force another drop out, this time through the backrower McEwan.

They’re looking better the Knights, they’ve worked their way back into the match physically…..but an error from Hetherington in the play the ball releases the pressure.

Marzhew knocks on another bomb in a contest with Savage and the Raiders have a fresh set in the 20 and off the scrum Sasagi goes straight through easily to score! That’s a very soft try but another big play from Sasagi, he’s been one of Canberra’s big improvers this year.

The rain is starting to fall in Canberra and it’s icy conditions already. Fogarty nails the kick and it’s 12-6 Raiders.

A flop penalty on Timoko gets the Knights up Canberra’s end and a late tackle from Starling gives them a fresh set. It’s their first proper chance of the day, can they make the most of it?

They can! Thompson hits half a gap and throws a sensational offload to Pearce-Paul to score. Nice fightback from the Knights.

Gagai converts and it’s 6-all. 

Marzhew knocks on a Fogarty kick and the Raiders have a fresh set inside the attacking 20 but Horsburgh drops an easy pass and the Knights recover.
